Open Access•Matt Minich, Lynne M Cotter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2025

The implementation of warning labels has been shown to slow the spread of harmful content on social media, but the mechanisms by which these interventions affect individuals' sharing decisions are not yet known. This study sought to establish the efficacy of these interventions and to explore the mechanisms of their influence using two parallel studies conducted within the United States: an online experiment that tested the effects of cannabis wa…

Linqi Lu, Hyerin Kwon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Online marketing of recreational cannabis products, particularly edibles, increasingly employs sensory appeals to attract adolescents and young adults (AYAs). The content analysis involved coding themes, video formats, the valence of attitude toward vaccination, and emotional expressions from the influencers. A majority of vide…

  • An Investigation into the Portrayal of Organ Donation on Grey’s Anatomy Seasons 1 Through 15

    Brian L Quick, Lauren A Kri et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2024

The current project sought to extend prior research examining organ donation portrayals on Grey’s Anatomy by examining the first fifteen seasons. Guided by the health belief model, content analysis revealed more attention was given to benefits of donation than barriers. Contrary to previous research, more attention was given to refuting rather than promoting commonly cited myths. The results also address attention to the health threat as well as …

  • Denying and Accepting a Family Member’s Illness: Uncertainty Management as a Process

    C M Thompson, Lynsey Romo et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2023

Doubt is a common, yet challenging form of uncertainty to have about another's illness. Although navigating illness uncertainty is a process of continual (re)appraisal and management, existing research narrowly examines windows of uncertainty experience. To illustrate how uncertainty management in the context of doubt is recursive, nonlinear, and ongoing, we apply a process approach to communication to uncertainty management theory. Drawing on in…
