Using velo-onto-epistemology to reimagine the candidate-supervisor-relationship
Traditionally, the candidate-supervisor-relationship is predicated on a supervisor as teacher/expert – candidate as learner/novice model. But what becomes possible when the materialities of this power dynamic are destabilised and reimagined? This article draws from emerging feminist ontologies to introduce the concept of velo-onto-epistemology [VOE] as a means of re-cycling candidate-supervisor-relationships. VOE acknowledges the agency of the bi…
Coming to know collectively
This experimental article provides an immanent alternative to the neo-positivist outcomes-driven turn currently cannibalising the Academy. It offers a stitched together, multiphrenic creature, formed in darkness, gore and toil; a co-generative performance embodying coming-to-know as a process of creative co-inquiry. It writes into existence an ungainly and seductive creature who is the speciation of a curious collective who met regularly to explo…
Using critical and post-critical pedagogies to pick at the seams of patriarchy from 'the inside
This article explores the use of critical and post-critical pedagogies in a rural Australian high school for the purposes of unsettling life-limiting gender beliefs and practices. The paper problematises two examples whereby site-specific knowledges, curriculum dictates, media texts and critical pedagogies were enmeshed to create politically charged spaces for re-seeing, re-thinking and re-doing gender. The first example involves a unit of work i…
Re - turning feelings that matter using reflexivity and diffraction to think with and through a moment of rupture in activist work
Over the past three decades, calls for alternative forms of qualitative research that require of the researcher to think deeply, differently, disruptively and diffractively have been gathering momentum. This article adds to a growing bank of possibilities for this type of work by re-turning feelings that emerged while doing insider activist work related to issues of gender in an isolated rural Australian community. The original five-year study dr…
Unsettling Research
"Unsettling Research" investigates what can be learned from the journey of an insider activist researcher seeking social transformations around issues of gender in an isolated rural Australian community. Unique and risky in its undertaking, the research evolves to create a new discourse in qualitative research. A seamless bricolage of autobiography/ethnography, narrative, feminist theory, critical theory, media literacy, critical pedagogy, and so…
