Hawaiʻi Suicide Rates by Occupation 2013–2023
The suicide rate in the U.S. has increased in the last two decades despite continued efforts to mitigate risks. This study explored potential variability in suicide rates by occupation in Hawaiʻi by analyzing 2430 death certificates from 2013 to 2023. Of these, 1988 suicide deaths occurred among individuals aged 20 to 64 years old, who constituted the study sample. Suicide death was identified using ICD-10 underlying cause of death codes X60–X84 …

Mindfulness Training for Social Service Providers in Hawaii: Context and Considerations
Few studies exploring outcomes for mindfulness training have specifically focused on social service providers such as case managers, juvenile justice (probation/parole) officers, family court liaisons, substance abuse and mental health counselors, and school behavioral health specialists, among others. This study examined whether social service professionals across various agencies in the state of Hawai‘i would be accepting of mindfulness-based t…
Cultural Considerations in a Phenomenological Study of Mindfulness With Vietnamese Youth and Cyclo Drivers
Despite the current burgeoning interest of secular mindfulness in the West and the exponential proliferation of mindfulness research, researchers have only dimly acknowledged and investigated the social–cultural contexts that condition interpretation of mindfulness practices. This is due in part to the bias of researchers to primarily include participants from more individualistic and first-world countries, and the conduct of research favoring me…

Applying Halliday’s linguistic theory in qualitative data analysis
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the usefulness of Halliday’s linguistic theory known as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in analysing qualitative data. In order to do this, it initially presents an overview of SFL, and then explains how and why four linguistic features namely, nominalisation, grammatical metaphor, thematic structure and lexical density are useful in examining qualitative data. The paper also discusses three…
Youth Perspective on Multiculturalism Using Photovoice Methodology
With increasing diversity and multiculturalism, there is a greater need to understand ways to foster positive intergroup interactions. In this study, youth ages 14 to 18 from three different regions in the United States ( N = 21) were given camera phones and instructed to take pictures of what multiculturalism meant to them and how it played a role in their life. Interviews and focus groups were conducted and transcribed, followed by thematic cod…
Making Meaning of Turning Points in Life Review: Values, Wisdom, and Life Satisfaction
In the life review process, individuals engage in meaning making, and this often entails a reversal of judgment of the events in their lives including turning points. This study examined older adults’ current judgment of turning point events as being positive, negative, or neutral over time (then and now). These results suggest that individuals who are able to overcome adversity, and to retell their life stories in a positive way, are more likely…
Strength in numbers? Cognitive reappraisal tendencies and psychological functioning among Latinos in the context of oppression
The typically positive relationship between cognitive reappraisal and psychological functioning may be nullified for Latinos embedded within multiple contexts of oppression (Perez & Soto, 2011). Multiply oppressive contexts are characterized by exposure to oppression at a societal level (distal oppression), in the immediate environment (proximal oppression), and at an individual level (personal oppression). We replicated and extended Perez and So…

Community Mobilization and Community‐Based Participatory Research to Prevent Youth Violence Among Asian and Immigrant Populations
Many community mobilization activities for youth violence prevention involve the researchers assisting communities in identifying, adapting, and/or tailoring evidence‐based programs to fit the community needs, population, and cultural and social contexts. This article describes a slightly different framework in which the collaborative research/evaluation project emerged from the community mobilization activities. As will be discussed, this collab…

Multiculturalism constitutes an important element of school climate, but the relation between perceived multiculturalism and academic achievement has not been widely studied. This study examined the influence of students' perceptions of school support for multiculturalism on academic achievement among 280 Asian American and Hispanic youth, including ethnic identity and ethnocultural empathy as potential mediators. Results of structural equation m…
Multiculturalism and subjective happiness as mediated by cultural and relational variables
A diverse ethnic context and an increasing immigrant youth population will soon become the reality across the entire U.S. demographic landscape. Research has suggested that a multicultural context positively influences ethnic minority and immigrant youth by fostering ethnic identity and psychosocial development. However, it is unknown whether and how perceived multiculturalism can affect positive youth outcomes such as life satisfaction and subje…
Acculturation Factors and Substance Use Among Asian American Youth
Cultural and Political Factors in Conducting Qualitative Research in China
One of the main strengths of qualitative research is to focus on ideas, concepts and meanings involving individuals and groups of people in their own discourse. Instead of testing a narrow hypothesis or making a generalisation about a population on certain issues under investigation, qualitative research attempts to present different insights which can only be unearthed by direct and personal engagement with research participants (Brannen, 1992).…
Acculturative dissonance, ethnic identity, and youth violence
Studies suggest that the process of acculturation for immigrant youth, particularly for second-generation youth, is significantly associated with delinquency and violence. This study explored the acculturation-violence link with respect to acculturative dissonance and ethnic identity. The results revealed in a sample of 329 Chinese, Cambodian, Mien/Laotian, and Vietnamese youth that acculturative dissonance was significantly predictive of serious…
Age differences in spirituality, mystical experiences and wisdom
Although philosophical and contemplative traditions suggest that religiousness and spirituality are associated with wisdom, few empirical studies have examined the relationship. This paper investigates the associations between spirituality and mystical experiences and two types of wisdom: practical wisdom, primarily the ability to understand and resolve difficult life dilemmas (or an ‘expert’ knowledge system and the highest level of synthesised …

Non-Familial Victimization Among Asian Pacific Islander Youth: The Oakland Experience
The few theoretical and empirical literature on victimization among the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) youth population have mainly focused on child maltreatment and sexual abuse within the home environment. Empirical evidence documenting non-familial victimization among API youth is virtually nonexistent. Analysis of official data collected by the Oakland Police Department in Oakland, California, between January and December 2000 showed that A…

Narcissism and immature love as mediators of vertical individualism and ludic love style
The present study examined how vertical individualism and self-construal relate to ludus. Vertical individualism has been found to be positively related to ludus, or a game-playing love style. In addition, given its positive association with both individualism and ludus, narcissism was explored as a potential mediator of the vertical individualism-ludus link. Immature love, i.e., seeing others as means to an end, was also hypothesized to be posit…
