  • Some Notes on Iraq

    Sol Yurick•ARTICLE•Social Text•1990

Some preconditions for to consider before coming to a position vis d vis Bush's U.N. backed imperial venture, (or possibly, the Crusades revisited). 1. The first issue is the question of who we are. This is adressed to those of who see ourselves as socialists. Some of us are Marxists... with a number of variations. It becomes harder and harder to determine what an constitutes since the state broke the Movement(s) of the 60's up: and since the Mov…

  • The Destiny Algorithm

    Sol Yurick•ARTICLE•Social Text•1988

As this world, or at least part of this world, became more and more inter-and intra-mediated by cybernetics systems-wires, radio waves, transceivers of all kinds designed by and for all bandwidths-dependent on computing and reality-stimulating devices of all kinds, a number of ancient problems, but in a new mode, arose; some anticipated and chewed-over by the ancient philosophers and illusionists, others unanticipated. Well, it had to happen, did…

Shall we, going from the is-like to the is, compare the once-lived with the never-lived? is a literary construct elevated into a tutelary d…

  • Response to Sol Yurick's "Political Economy of Junk"; Response to a Response

    Donald Light, Sol Yurick•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1971

I would make several comments on Sol Yurick's article, "The Political Economy of Junk," in the December 1970 MR. I have no quarrel with his basic thesis that the current spread of, and alarm over, drug addiction must be viewed in the context of the political and economic system from which it springs. I think, though, that Mr. Yurick depicts its genesis too much as a conscious, deliberate act of Nixon or "the ruling class." Furthermore I think he …

  • The Political Economy of Junk

    Sol Yurick•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•1970

Tragedy of the kid junkie? How? Do it like TimeLifeHamillDailyUSNews&WorldReportBreslin...Say something about the eyes. Coldness in the eyes; tombstones in the eyes of a pink-cheeked kid who's caught a Jones. Wan face. The shivers on a hot day and sweating on a cold one. Do the desolation row bit. Relate to bombed-out houses; war image. Crouching in the rotted doorway and living in the abandoned slum building. O.D.'s in the empty rooms far away f…
