Open Access•Theresa Lemke, Sebastian Hökby et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2025

INTRODUCTION: Inadequate sleep duration and sleep-related problems are highly prevalent among adolescents and pose a significant health risk during a critical development stage. This study seeks to explore associations between sleep and suicidal ideation among adolescents. METHODS: Cross-sectional questionnaire data from the baseline wave (2016-2018) of a cohort of 12- to 16-year-old Swedish adolescents (n = 4433, 50.39% girls) were analyzed. A s…

  • Adolescents’ screen time displaces multiple sleep pathways and elevates depressive symptoms over twelve months

Open Access•Sebastian Hökby, Jesper Alvarsson et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Recently the Swedish Public Health Agency published recommendations of a maximum of two-to-three hours of daily leisure screen time for adolescents aged 13–18, partly to promote better sleep (2024-Sep-02). Biologically and socially, adolescence is characterized by belated sleep times, and depressive effects of screen time can arise through sleep displacements. Theorized links between screen time, sleep, and depression, merited examination of four…

  • Longitudinal Effects of Screen Time on Depressive Symptoms among Swedish Adolescents

Open Access•Sebastian Hökby, Joakim Westerlund et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Studies suggest that hourly digital screen time increases adolescents' depressive symptoms and emotional regulation difficulties. However, causal mechanisms behind such associations remain unclear. We hypothesized that problem-focused and/or emotion-focused engagement coping moderates and possibly mediates this association over time. Questionnaire data were collected in three waves from a representative sample of Swedish adolescents (0, 3 and 12 …

  • Investigating the effectiveness of three school based interventions for preventing psychotic experiences over a year period – a secondary data analysis study of a randomized control trial

Open Access•Lorna Staines, Colm Healy et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This study provides the first evidence for a school based intervention that reduce & prevent PEs in adolescence. This intervention is a combination of a school-based screening for psychopathology and subsequent referral intervention significantly reduced PEs in adolescents. Although further research is needed, our findings point to the effectiveness of school-based programmes for prevention of future mental health problems

Open Access•Vladimir Carli, Gergö Hadlaczky et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Background: Electrodermal hyporeactivity has been proposed as a marker of suicidal risk. The EUDOR-A study investigated the prevalence of electrodermal hyporeactivity among patients with depression and its association with attempted and completed suicide. Methods: Between August 2014 and March 2016, 1,573 in- and outpatients with a primary diagnosis of depression (active or remission phase) were recruited at 15 European psychiatric centers. Each …

  • Decision-Making in Suicidal Behavior

Open Access•Gergö Hadlaczky, Sebastian Hökby et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

This and previous studies suggest that altered decision-making is involved in suicide attempts. In our study, we show the involvement of loss aversion in particular, and propose that individuals high in loss aversion are discouraged from carrying out the suicide attempt because of a greater focus on the negative consequences of the decision

  • Direct Self-Injurious Behavior (D-SIB) and Life Events among Vocational School and High School Students

Open Access•Lili Olga Horváth, Maria Balint et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Although several studies have recently assessed direct self-injurious behavior (D-SIB) among adolescents, it is still understudied in adolescents attending vocational schools: an educational setting generally associated with lower socioeconomic status. After extending the "Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe" (SEYLE) project to a vocational school population, we examined their D-SIB and life event characteristics compared to the high scho…
