Mobilizing against the disadvantaged
Extant research on collective action has investigated how both advantaged and disadvantaged group members mobilise to support the rights of minority status groups. More recent research has begun to examine what might lead advantaged group members to engage in actions that aim to harm disadvantaged groups and protect and/or promote their advantaged group’s status and interests. This review aims to define “anti-minority collective action” by critic…
Do they dislike us as much as we think? Positive contact as a potential rectifier of meta-attitude inaccuracy in conflictual intergroup settings
Intergroup meta-attitude inaccuracy—the extent to which perceptions of outgroup views towards the ingroup diverge from what outgroup members actually think—fuels intergroup hostility, yet research on its precursors is scarce. Through four correlational studies, we examined whether and how intergroup contact predicts meta-attitude (in)accuracy in three conflict contexts: Black–White British in the United Kingdom (UK), Turks–Kurds in Turkey, and Ca…
Just kidding? Exploring the role of traditional versus counter-traditional gender role jokes on gender identity threat
While traditional gender roles have been examined in the context of online communication, less is known about the implications of encountering counter-traditional gender roles (e.g., depicting men as caring and women as independent) on social media. We investigated participants’ perceived gender identity threat upon exposure to traditional versus counter-traditional gender role jokes that targeted either men or women. An online experiment ( N = 2…
The effects of ideal standards and parental approval on mate choice among emerging adults
The current study examines how ideal standards and parental approval interplay in the decision to marry via three consecutive studies among Turkish emerging adults. The first study explored desirable traits for a potential spouse, and participants ( N = 309) rated and rank-ordered 56 traits. Findings revealed that trustworthiness, honesty, and loyalty were the most desired traits. Informed by the first study's findings, we designed vignettes, tes…
