Guidance on Community-Based Mental Health Support for Black Youth in Canada
Evidence indicates disparities in mental health outcomes among Black youth compared to other racial and ethnic groups. These disparities may be related to gaps in the quality of mental health services and inadequate culturally safe practices, which hinder the ability to appropriately support the mental health needs of Black youth. This study aimed to develop a guidance document with recommendations for the delivery of mental health services for B…
Factors Influencing Racial Discrimination and Prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder Among Black Canadian Youths
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition with far-reaching implications for youth well-being and society. This paper examined the prevalence of depressive symptoms consistent with probable MDD and their association with self-reported experiences of racial discrimination within the Black youth population in Canada. This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. Questionnaires were administered vi…
Interventions to Improve the Mental Health of Black Youth in Western Countries
Correlates of low resilience and physical and mental well-being among Black youths in Canada
In this study, the Black youth participants reported relatively low resilience scores. Employment, physical health, and mental health status were factors that contributed to low resilience. Further studies are needed to examine the causal link between resilience and its dynamic effect on health outcomes among Black youth. More interventions are needed to make mental health services accessible to Black youth in a more culturally sensitive way with…
Burnout among Residents
Burnout is a serious occupational phenomenon that can degenerate into other conditions or disrupt one's professional performance. Significant correlates were associated with high rates of burnout. Leaders of medical schools and policymakers need to acknowledge, design, and implement various strategies capable of providing continuous effective mental health support to improve the psychological health of medical residents across Canada
Isolation, Economic Precarity, and Previous Mental Health Issues as Predictors of PTSD Status in Females Living in Fort McMurray During Covid-19
Overall, these results support our hypothesis that volatility in factors such as social support, economic stability, and mental health work together to increase the probability of women developing PTSD in response to a collective trauma such as COVID-19
Prevalence and Determinants of Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms in Residents of Fort McMurray 12 Months Following the 2020 Flooding
This study showed that there was an increased magnitude of moderate to high anxiety symptoms among respondents following the natural disaster particularly the flood in 2020. The predictors of likely GAD include positive employment status, history of depression diagnosis, and the need to have mental health counseling. Policymakers may mitigate the rise of anxiety after flooding in vulnerable areas by addressing these and other factors
Evaluating the Prevalence and Predictors of Moderate to Severe Depression in Fort McMurray, Canada during the Covid-19 Pandemic
In addition to the effect of the pandemic and other measures taken to curb the psychopathological impact of the pandemic, policymakers need to implement policies to manage individuals with preexisting mental health conditions and provide strong employer support
Evaluating Community Resilience and Associated Factors One Year after the Catastrophic Fort McMurray Flood
The study showed a low resilience rate among respondents following the 2020 flooding in Fort McMurray. Factors contributing to low resilience include age, history of depression or anxiety, and place of residence after the flood. After the flood, receiving support from the government was shown to be a protective factor. Further studies are needed to explore robust risk factors of low resilience and measures to promote normal to high resilience amo…
Prevalence and Correlates of Likely Major Depressive Disorder among Medical Students in Alberta, Canada
This study suggests a high prevalence of likely MDD among medical students who do not feel they have sufficient social support from friends and family. Social adjustments, including talking to friends and family and participating in leisure activities, could reduce the level of depression among medical students
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Wildfires
Background: Over 90,000 residents had to be evacuated from Fort McMurray (FMM), Alberta, Canada due to the wildfire that engulfed the city in May 2016. Overall, about 2400 homes or 10% of the housing stock in Fort McMurray were destroyed. The fire consumed about 200,000 hectors of forest, reaching into Saskatchewan. During major disasters, communities’ infrastructure is disrupted, and psychological, economic, and environmental effects are felt fo…
Mental Health Impacts of Wildfire, Flooding and Covid-19 on Fort McMurray School Board Staff and Other Employees
The study has established that likely PTSD symptoms were significantly higher in other employees compared to those of school board employees. Greater exposure to the traumatic events and a greater perceived lack of support from other employers might have contributed to the significantly higher prevalence of PTSD in other employees
