Opposition, Repression, and Cold War: The Case of the 1956 Student Movement in Timișoara by Corina Snitar
Although there is a rich literature on the protests in 1956 in Poland and Hungary against their Communist regimes, little has appeared in English about the impact of those protests in Romania. Corina Snitar has admirably filled that void with this study. Her consultation and close reading of relevant primary and secondary sources in English and Romanian, combined with her use of previously unpublished British and U.S. diplomatic reports, makes th…

Shattered Illusions: Britain and Iuliu Maniu, 1940–1945
The Romanian Orthodox Church and the HolocaustIon Popa
The Holocaust in Romania had its own distinctive features. It was carried out by a sovereign German ally, and the deaths resulted primarily from deportation and incarceration under inhuman conditions rather than from outright murder. Romania’s wartime dictator, Marshal Ion Antonescu, acted on his own—albeit in a context of Nazi domination over continental Europe. His treatment of the Jews was ambivalent. For those of Bukovina and Bessarabia, whom…
Prelude to Mass Murder: The Pogrom in Iaşi, Romania, June 29, 1941 and Thereafter
Jean Ancel's academic life was devoted to the study of the Holocaust in Romania. Born in the northern city of Iaşi in 1940, Ancel emigrated in 1959 to Israel, where he studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After graduating, he worked as an archivist for Yad Vashem—a job that gave him unfettered access to the institution's rich archival holdings. He drew meticulously and authoritatively upon these sources to produce a body of scholarship …
Ion Antonescu and the Holocaust in Romania
Ion Antonescu’s obsession with what he saw as the Bolshevik menace drove his policy towards the Jews. The vast majority of those living in the provinces bordering on, and occupied by, the Soviet Union between 1940 and 1941—Bessarabia and Bukovina—were deported to Transnistria, where more than seventy percent of them were murdered or died of disease and starvation. Ukrainian militias and ethnic German Selbstschutz played a major role in the massac…
Researching MI6 and Romania, 1940––49
In respect of Romania little has entered the public domain in Britain about the work of the MI6 network which was active throughout the Second World War in gathering and passing on information to the British authorities about German military operations in Romania and Transnistria. The aim of this article is to shed some light on the network's activity in the period 1940-49. My research is based upon previously unpublished primary sources held by …

Taunting the Bear’: Romania and the Warsaw Pact, 1963–89
Recently released documents from the Romanian military archives relating to Romania's stance within the Warsaw Pact permit a more refined view of Romania's autonomy within the Pact than has hitherto been possible. They show that the conventional assertion that Nicolae Ceauşescu refused to join the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 is misleading since he was not invited by the Soviet Union to participate in it. They reveal details of …
Ghetto Experience in Golta, Transnistria, 1942–1944
Despite the appalling conditions in the ghettos and labor camp in the town of Golta, Transnistria, most of the Jews who arrived there in late spring 1942 (after having escaped the December 1941 massacres in the Bogdanovka area by the Romanian authorities) survived their ordeal. This article describes and analyzes the conditions in two ghettos and a labor camp, concluding that the experience of the Jews in Golta was a microcosm of ghetto experienc…

Rewriting the past: Trends in contemporary Romanian historiography
The later years of the Ceauşescu regime witnessed a reappraisal of the Romanians' Roman past. This article analyses the reasons for this and in so doing considers the part played by language and history in the Romanians' perception of their national identity, the extent to which the regime's creation of new truths distorted Romanian history, and the manner in which the historical consciousness of Romanians was politicized and exploited by the Cea…
