    This paper explores issues of orthographic representation in two different projects, in two different locations, and draws some general conclusions about the role of an outsider linguistic anthropologist in working with individuals and their data.     This paper surveys the history of dictionary construction and orthographic choice in the Comoros — a former French colony in the Indian Ocean — with special reference to issues of literacy, identity, and politics.     This paper is an attempt to explore the early blues scene in St. Louis and the role that the city had in the development of this unique AfroAmerican style of music. Blues is a particularly difficult subject to research. It is typically performed in settings that frequently are not considered respectable or worth writing about.   • Matrilocal Residence and Nonsororal Polygyny: A Case from the Comoro Islands

    In the Comoro Islands the preferred form of marriage is matrilocal nonsororal polygyny. This form is little understood and according to some, impossible. After providing a brief background to the Comoro Islands, this paper illustrates how this marriage pattern operates, and proposes a hypothesis to explain its occurrence in the western Indian Ocean area
