  • Exploring factors associated with inflammation in stressed workers

Open Access•Akihiro Koreki, Hisateru Tachimori et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our findings suggest that the feeling of fatigue may reflect chronic stress-induced systemic low-grade inflammation in the body, highlighting the importance of self-monitoring fatigue for early intervention. Inflammation-based stress management holds promise in preventing both mental and physical illnesses in stressed office workers

  • Cost-effectiveness analysis of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy in patients with anxiety disorders in secondary mental health care settings alongside a randomized controlled trial

Open Access•Mitsuhiro Sado, Akihiro Koreki et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Augmented MBCT for anxiety disorders is cost-effective compared with TAU post-treatment from a public healthcare insurance perspective. Future studies should include long-term observations, and analysis from a societal perspective

  • Altered sense of agency in schizophrenia

Open Access•Akihiro Koreki, Yuri Terasawa et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

This study revealed a disturbance in the impact of cardiac interoceptive signals on an implicit index of SoA in schizophrenia. This supports the notion that pathophysiological disruption of the central integration of interoceptive information increases vulnerability to disturbances in self-representation and the associated expression of schizophrenic symptoms

  • Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on patients with mental health problems and the differences among diagnostic categories

Open Access•Yuki Mashima, Teruki Koizumi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2022

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in a total upending of our daily lives. While anxiety and depression were frequently reported among the general population, the pandemic’s impact on patients with mental health problems remains unknown. Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey involving 1,166 patients was conducted at one psychiatric hospital and one mental health clinic. Results: Symptom deteriorati…

  • Comparison of White Matter Structure of Drug-Naïve Patients With Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder Using Diffusion Tensor Tractography

Open Access•Akihiro Koreki, Richi Niida et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Background The presence of microstructural white matter (WM) abnormalities in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) has previously been reported. However, the interpretation of data is challenging because pharmacological treatment has a potential effect on WM integrity. To date, no study has compared the differences in WM structure among drug-naïve BD patients, drug-naïve major depression disorder (MDD) patients, and healthy controls (HC) using …

  • Case Report

Open Access•Akihiro Koreki, Teruki Koizumi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Cross-cultural understanding of psychiatric symptoms is important in the current globalised society. Lack of knowledge regarding culture-dependent manifestations of psychiatric illnesses may lead to misjudgement by clinicians, resulting in inappropriate treatment. We present the cases of two patients with schizophrenia who showed Japanese-culture-dependent postures ( seiza and dogeza ). Seiza is a Japanese style of formal floor sitting. Dogeza in…

  • Dysconnectivity of the Agency Network in Schizophrenia

Open Access•Akihiro Koreki, Takaki Maeda et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Background: Self-disturbances in schizophrenia have recently been explained by an abnormality in the sense of agency (SoA). The cerebral structures of SoA in healthy people are considered to mainly include the insula and inferior parietal lobule. In contrast, the functional lesion of aberrant SoA in schizophrenia is not yet fully understood. Considering the recent explanation of establishing SoA from the standpoint of associative learning, the "a…

  • Catatonic Stupor in Schizophrenic Disorders and Subsequent Medical Complications and Mortality

Open Access•Michitaka Funayama, Taketo Takata et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2018

OBJECTIVE: Although catatonia can occur secondary to a general medical condition, catatonia itself has been known to lead to various medical compolications. Although case reports on the association of catatonia with subsequent medical complications have been documented, no comprehensive large-scale study has been performed. To investigate specific medical complications after catatonia, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of specific medical…
