Social varieties of eating out
This article reveals social varieties of eating out through a comparison of the metropolises of Santiago (Chile) and Paris (France). Building on recent scholarship, we move beyond dichotomies of work vs. leisure and domesticity vs. commodification by generating a typology that integrates spatial, social, and temporal dimensions. Operationally, the spatial dimension corresponds to eating places, the social dimension to commensality (eating with ot…
An Agentic Approach to Food Access and Acquisition
How do urban residents access and acquire food? Building on the food desert scholarship, I propose an agentic framework and fieldwork in two mixed neighborhoods (one gentrifying, one working-class suburban) in the Paris metropolis. First- and second-generation immigrants perceive the metropolis as a rich and diverse food environment, whereas natives perceive their neighborhood of residence as a food-deficient environment. First- and second-genera…
Meal synchronization and commensality in Santiago and Paris
Strength in Numbers
Food Desert or Food Oasis? Insights from Mexican Chicago
In those neighborhoods that epidemiologists identify as “food deserts,” access to food is difficult and limited to unhealthy options, whereas in “food oases,” access to healthy food is easier and widely available. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Mexican Chicago, this article moves from the deterministic, spatial frameworks of food deserts and food oases toward a meaning-centered framework of residents' creation of food access and acquisition. …

Meal times and synchronization
This paper investigates the temporal dimension of meals. Specifically, it compares meal schedules and their social determinants in two metropolises, Santiago (Chile) and Paris (France). Our empirical material is drawn from two comparable data sources: Encuesta de Comensalidad en Adultos de la Región Metropolitana (Santiago, Chile) and Santé, Inégalités et Ruptures Sociales (Paris, France). Our research highlights cross-metropolitan similarities a…
Class, culture, and structure
In this article, I discuss cultural omnivorousness through a structural framework. Omnivorousness is one of two theoretical approaches to class and culture, together with homology. In its original formulation, the omnivore thesis postulates that diversity, rather than exclusion, becomes the principle of cultural distinction: while the upper classes combine legitimate and illegitimate tastes and lifestyles, the lower classes remain restricted to i…
