  • Application of Space and Place Theories to Design

    Denise Lawrence‐zúniga, Denise Lawrence-Zúñiga•CHAPTER•2019

Anthropological inquiry about the reciprocal influence of human behavior on space and place primarily focuses on the production and use of built environments. Many questions about “design” began in the 19th century when medical doctors sought to “cure” schizophrenia through the architecture of mental hospitals. Vigorous renewed interest re-emerged, however, in the mid-20th century when designers and planners, sometimes also trained in psychologic…

  • Residential Design Guidelines, Aesthetic Governmentality, and Contested Notions of Southern California Suburban Places

    Open Access•Denise Lawrence‐zúniga•ARTICLE•Economic Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Since the 1970s, San Gabriel Valley suburban cities have become a desirable destination for thousands of immigrants from Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, and Southeast Asia, but their remaking of existing residential landscapes has provoked controversy and opposition. At play are two contrasting real estate value regimes: a regional or transnational perspective held by most immigrants and a traditional or preservationist view advocated by long-…

  • Bungalows and Mansions

    Denise Lawrence‐zúniga, Denise Lawrence-Zúñiga•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•2014•Cited by: 3

Contested discourses of suburban places have brought increasing attention to their historic "whiteness" as recent immigrants with distinct aesthetic sensibilities remodel houses and transform neighborhoods. This study examines opposition to largely Chinese immigrant renovations of early 20th century bungalows in Alhambra, California by preservationist homeowners who favor restoring houses to their original conditions. Pressing for aesthetic gover…

  • Some Thoughts on Material Agency, Urban Practices, and Collecting Strategies

    Open Access•Denise Lawrence‐zúniga•ARTICLE•Museum Anthropology•2014•References: 8

The concept of material agency can and should apply to museum collection strategies. Drawing on studies of preservationist homeowners who, in restoring their homes, discover the agency of previous builders and occupants in shaping the house's material qualities, this study proposes a broad concept of "habitability" to guide collecting and for actualizing the agency of older objects. A second area of inquiry examines domestic technologies designed…

This paper examines the construction of identity and lifestyle through consumption practices associated with the restoration of humble early 20thcentury bungalows in Southern California. Homeowners engage in the historic preservation of their homes, endowing them with agency, and reveal in narratives personal transformation of identity and lifestyle. As preservationists they turn their experiences of private consumption into civic activism, colle…
