Open Access•Rocío García-Carrión, Andrea Khalfaoui et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Educational…•2026

Every year, thousands of young people in Europe leave education prematurely, with significant individual, social and economic consequences. Despite recent improvements in overall rates of early school leaving in Europe, substantial disparities remain within and across countries, with children living in poverty, those with migrant backgrounds, and those from Roma or Traveller communities facing additional barriers to education. Following a multipl…

  • Partnerships to tackle the effects of socio-economic inequality on children’s experiences of school

Open Access•Karen Laing, Ulrike Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Educational…•2025

Education is a key driver of resilience against the backdrop of increasing uncertainty provoked by enduring forms of social injustice. Yet, for many children living in poverty, school is a site in which economic inequalities are reproduced and children experience further exclusion and stigma. Nearly a quarter of families in Europe are at risk of poverty. In the UK, nine in every class of thirty children are living in poverty. Poverty has been exa…

  • Intersecting paths of the local and the international

    Karen Laing, Lucy Davies•ARTICLE•Women s History Review•2021

Recent histories have drawn attention to indigenous peoples’ mobilities, trans-indigenous activist networks and the participation of indigenous people in international forums, such as the United Nations. However, many of these histories have overlooked indigenous women as key players on the international stage and the ways their presence in the international arena was transformative for indigenous rights back home. One example of the contribution…

Empirical data from the ‘Language for All’ study, which investigates SLCN provision in schools in England, are analysed to…

  • Students’ views on fairness in education

Laura Mazzoli Smith, Liz Todd et al.•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 37

This paper discusses a research project which sought to find out about young people’s views on fairness in education in English schools. Fairness is an everyday term, which in policy hides multiple and contradictory positions across the political divide. In education, we find a policy context that focuses on distributional justice and equality of opportunity but also on principles of freedom and choice. This paper argues that engaging with how yo…

  • The White Australia Nettle’

    Karen Laing•ARTICLE•History Australia•2017•Cited by: 1

After Australia federated in 1901, the new Commonwealth government implemented policies that were aimed at establishing a system of labour protections for white male workers unparalleled around the world. This included introducing a number of bills that became known as the White Australia Policy (WAP), which sought to exclude non-white immigration to regulate any attempt to undercut the ‘white man’s wage’. After the Harvester judgement in 1907, w…

  • Closing the gate

Open Access•Angela Melville, Karen Laing•ARTICLE•International Journal of Law in…•2010•References: 8

In 2001, the Legal Services Commission (LSC) introduced a new pilot, the Family Advice and Information Network (FAInS), which recognised that family law clients typically face a cluster of legal and non-legal issues. Family lawyers involved in FAInS were encouraged to address a client’s legal problems, and then refer the client to other services for assistance with non-legal issues. In this way, family law clients were to be offered a holistic se…

  • Personal Action Plans

    Open Access•Angela Melville, Karen Laing•ARTICLE•International Journal of Law in…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Personal Action Plans (PAPs) have been used to encourage client self-management within healthcare services, and are a novel innovation within legal services. This paper examines the use of PAPs by publicly funded family lawyers in England and Wales. It was intended that PAPs were written collaboratively between lawyers and clients in order to assist clients to clarify and resolve issues independently, and aid referrals to other service providers.…

  • Doing the Right Thing

    Karen Laing•ARTICLE•International Journal of Law…•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Over recent years, concern has mounted at the unstable nature of cohabiting relationships compared to marital ones, and also about the fact that any children from these relationships are more likely to experience the separation of their parents than the children of a marital union. The discourse of the Family Law Act 1996 holds that separating parents should behave in a conciliatory and reasonable way to each other, maintain contact with their ch…
