Outcomes Among Patients Hospitalized for Covid-19 Treated with Remdesivir in an Urban Center Pre-Covid-19 Vaccination
Objective Data on treatment outcomes among minority populations treated with remdesivir are limited. We sought to evaluate outcomes among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and treated with remdesivir among a predominantly Black and LatinX population. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and treated with remdesivir at an urban hospital in Newark, NJ, between May 1, 2020, and April 30, 2021, p…
Vaccine Hesitancy at Nine Community Sites Across the United States, Early in Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout
Background Vaccine hesitancy has been a significant concern throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy can be attributed to lack of confidence in vaccines, complacency about the health threat, or lack of convenience of vaccination. To date, few studies have used methods designed to include populations underrepresented in research when identifying factors associated with vaccine hesitancy. Methods Between January and July 2021, potential …

Changes in Migration and Mortality Among Patients With Kidney Failure in Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria
The findings of this cross-sectional study suggest there was a significant increase in the number of people receiving dialysis outside of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. However, no significant differences in mortality rates before and after the hurricane were found, which may reflect disaster emergency preparedness among dialysis facilities and the population with kidney failure, as well as efforts from other stakeholders
Medicaid Expansion and Medicare-Financed Hospitalizations Among Adult Patients With Incident Kidney Failure
In this cross-sectional study with a difference-in-differences analysis, the ACA's Medicaid expansion was associated with decreases in Medicare-financed hospitalizations and hospital days and increases in dual Medicare and Medicaid coverage. These findings suggest favorable spillover outcomes of Medicaid expansion to Medicare-financed care, which is the primary payer for patients with kidney failure
Cabotegravir for HIV Prevention in Cisgender Men and Transgender Women
BACKGROUND: Safe and effective long-acting injectable agents for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are needed to increase the options for preventing HIV infection. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, noninferiority trial to compare long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA, an integrase strand-transfer inhibitor [INSTI]) at a dose of 600 mg, given intramuscularly every 8 …

Are There Social Returns to Education in Developing Countries? Evidence from Indonesia
Despite growing public-sector investment in education in developing economies, there are few studies that have examined the efficacy of these investments. In this paper, we estimate social returns to education in Indonesia, using individual-level data on wages from five waves of the Indonesia Family Life Surveys (1993–2014) and subdistrict-level data on average education levels from the National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), a large-scale natio…
Racial Disparities in Perinatal Outcomes and Pregnancy Spacing Among Women Delaying Initiation of Childbearing
The Influence of Maternal Mobility on Birth Outcomes of non-Hispanic Blacks
Delivering A Very Low Birth Weight Infant and The Subsequent Risk of Divorce or Separation
Competition and Health Plan Performance
OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess whether health maintenance organizations (HMOs) operating in competitive markets, or markets with substantial HMO penetration, perform better on the standardized Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey (CAHPS) measures. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a secondary analysis of nonexperimental, cross-sectional data. DATA SOURCES: Data were obtained from a variety …
