Varieties of Misrecognition: Connecting Bourdieu and Fanon toward an Analysis of Racialized Islamic Fields
This article explains variations in misrecognition of domination among the racialized subaltern. I draw on a comparative analysis of the fields of Islam in France and India, informed by the work of Bourdieu and Fanon. I first argue that Bourdieu's concept of the religious field provides a crucial reframing of the Islamic field whereby religious judgments represent classification struggles over legitimate Islam. Second, I approach misrecognition i…

Citizen Outsider: Children of North African Immigrants in France . By Jean Beaman
How do racial minorities form and inhabit different identities, make sense of the racism they confront, and develop a political consciousness—in a nation that refuses to acknowledge racial categories? This question informs the analyses that Citizen Outsider offers. Citizen Outsider presents the experiences of French descendants of immigrants from the Maghréb (Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia). Drawing on 45 interviews and nine months of fieldwork am…

The Sorrow of Parting: Ethnographic Depth and the Role of Emotions
Literature on emotions and the ethnographic method has focused more on ethnographers' emotions than the importance of informants' emotions. This essay aims to analytically clarify the undertheorized role of informants' emotions in fieldwork and to reflect on the consequences of the ethnographer's need to invite and elicit their informants' emotional vulnerabilities. Drawing on the anthropology of/from the body, it argues that in "revelatory momen…
Toward a Global Sociology of Religion
This article offers an example of a global approach to teaching the sociology of religion, a course that typically focuses on American religious phenomena. It builds on three interventions in the movement for a global sociology: connecting the local and global, moving beyond methodological nationalism, and developing an ethical orientation toward sociological questions. Such an approach encourages students to question taken-for-granted assumption…
Prayer and pedagogy: Redefining education among Salafist Muslim women in France
This article draws on participant observation in a working-class Salafist women’s mosque community outside of Lyon. A decade after the headscarf ban in public schools, public hostility and aggression against Salafist women is rampant. As they remain estranged from the secular educational system, prayer and Islamic education have come to serve as an important substitute. Prayer is defined expansively as recitation, supplication, and the effort to …
Celebrating the prophet: Religious nationalism and the politics ofMilad‐un‐Nabi festivals inIndia
The traditional honoring of the birth of theProphetMohammed (Milad‐un‐Nabi) has shifted in numerous Indian cities from private prayer and ritual meals in the home to grand public festivals that bear resemblances toHindu religious processions. In 2010 in the southernIndian city ofHyderabad, large‐scaleMilad‐un‐Nabi festivals became implicated inHindu–Muslim nationalist riots that erupted weeks later at the commencement of aHindu festival forHanuma…
Debating the Burqa in France: The Antipolitics of Islamic Revival
In 2009 a French national commission was created to issue recommendations against "the burqa" and raise the possibility of a ban on the practice in certain public settings. This paper explores the different normative stakes of politicizing the burqa and the form of Islamic Revival with which it is associated. Recent scholarship has sought to overturn orientalist depictions of Islamic movements but has insisted that bodily ethical practices, such …
The Labor of Pleasure: How Perceptions of Emotional Labor Impact Women's Enjoyment of Pornography
Propornography and antipornography literatures have failed to elucidate the complexity of women's consumption of pornography. This article submits that a reconstructed theory of emotional labor, developed from the perspective of the consumer, explains some of women's ambivalence toward pornography. Findings are based on interviews with 30 women who enjoy porn films. The women's ambivalence reflected their perception of emotional labor in pornogra…
