On Sex and Survival
This essay argues that queer theory's increasing attachment to survival as an ethical and political imperative has compromised its ability to engage sexuality as such. Taking as its provocation the controversy surrounding gay sex parties during COVID-19 lockdowns, it asks why such acts fail to register as expressions of queerness—as forms of queer fugitivity, ungovernability, or world making. Queer Beyond Repair
This essay offers a critical examination of the established opposition between queer of color critique and the antisocial thesis. It challenges the widely rehearsed claim that the ethics of negativity associated with the antisocial thesis is premised on a position of (white gay male) privilege and questions the corollary, conceptual alignment of racialized queer subjects with repair and affirmation. This essay examines the role of failure in the work of Leo Bersani through the lens of self-shattering, impersonal narcissism, and castration. It revisits Bersani's account of narcissism and masochism in "Erotic Assumptions" and critiques his subsequent shift toward impersonal narcissism in Homos and Intimacies. The essay concludes by showing how the notion of castration, roundly rejected by Bersani, may address the impasse between solipsism and …
The place of the dead, the time of dictatorship
In 1993, the body of former Philippine dictator, Ferdinand E Marcos, was moved from Honolulu, Hawaii, where he died in exile, to a private mausoleum attached to his ancestral home in Batac, Ilocos Norte. Preserved and placed in a refrigerated coffin while his wife, Imelda, lobbied for his burial at the Heroes' Cemetery, Marcos's body remained on display until 2016, when permission for his interment was granted by the newly elected president, Rodr…

Drawing on the writings of Georges Bataille and Leo Bersani, this essay reexamines the long-held association of homosexuality with a radical erotics of death from the vantage of queer of color critique. Employing first-person storytelling techniques to capture the experience of Manila and gay life in a third world city, Benedicto offers a counterintuitive portrait of gay spaces in postcolonial cities. This article examines the role played by “third world” queer place-making practices in the reproduction of postcolonial dreams of urban and global modernity. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in Manila, the Philippines, the article investigates the transformation of the Brutalist structures erected under the Marcos dictatorship into sites of transgender performance. Shared Spaces of Transnational Transit
Between 2006 and 2008, I conducted autoethnographic research in what I refer to as Manila's ‘‘bright lights'' gay scene. As part of that research, I collected travel stories from young, urban, middle and upper-class gay men, in an attempt to draw out the relationship between transnational mobility, urban gay life, and dreams of global belonging.
