Barthes’s Black Soldier: The Making of a Mythological Celebrity
This article examines Roland Barthes’s representation of the African body and the theoretical use of blackness in one of his most famous texts, Mythologies (1957). More specifically, it examines the implications of the paradigmatic status conferred to the so-called “black soldier” based on the analysis of a popular French magazine photography. It argues not only that Barthes’s original representation is fraught with misreadings of the image, but …

The Troubling Popularity of West African Romance Novels
This essay acknowledges the success, in West Africa, of a collection of romance novels written in French. Launched in the 1990s by the Nouvelles Editions Africaines as the Adoras collection, the series has grown to become one of the most spectacular success stories in African (francophone) editorial history. This essay argues that the popularity of the Adoras novels not only as a popular genre but also as fiction in French can be perceived as tro…
This article examines the discourse surrounding departmentalization in Antillian literature through an analysis of Edouard Glissant's 1958 La lzarde (The Ripening) . It argues that the final melancholy of the hero (and mouthpiece of the author), though ignored by Glissant's numerous critics, serves to nuance the positive representation of the victorious local elections in Martinique. Far from a minor detail, the postcolonial hero's melancholy, wh…
Magical Realism: Arme miraculeuse? for the African Novel
Congolese novelist Sony Labou Tansi has been widely celebrated as a leader in the revival of francophone African letters that took place in the 1980s. In the process, commentators have repeatedly insisted on affiliating him with the tradition of magical realism. Using his first novel, La vie et demie [Life and a Half], as a case study, this essay argues that this exclusive focus on magical realism at the expense of other, perhaps more significant…
