  • Sarah Shurts. Resentment and the Right: French Intellectual Identity Reimagined, 1898–2000

    Open Access•Venita Datta•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

Intellectuals in France have long been icons of national identity. Scholarship on the history of French intellectuals took off in the 1980s and 1990s—at a time marked by discussions about the supposed irrelevance of intellectuals in national life—with numerous works published on both sides of the Atlantic by Pascal Ory, Jean-François Sirinelli, Michel Winock, Christophe Charle, Tony Judt, and Robert Wohl, among others. While some of these works a…

  • Buffalo Bill Goes to France

    Venita Datta•ARTICLE•French Historical Studies•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 33

In 1889 and 1905 William F. Cody, commonly known as Buffalo Bill, took his Wild West show on a tour of Europe, playing to sellout crowds on both trips. Although at first glance Buffalo Bill may appear to be a symbol of the vanishing American West, he also represented the power of the new American colossus, embodied by the conquest of the frontier through the technology of the rifle. Buffalo Bill's Wild West was a symbol of American invention and …

The eight authors of this article, all historians or social scientists teaching in departments of French at American universities, assess the multidisciplinary field of “French Studies” today. The article elaborates on our experiences teaching and researching French and francophone history, society, politics, and culture. In particular, it addresses pedagogical challenges, study abroad, interdepartmental collaboration, institutional pressures, th…

  • Camille Robcis. The Law of Kinship: Anthropology, Psychoanalysis, and the Family in France

    Venita Datta•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2014

While the family occupies a central place in the definition of national identity in many cultures, it is perhaps in France that the notion of kinship is most closely associated with public debates about the nation. In the United States, for example, religion plays an important role in shaping discussions about what constitutes a family. In France, however, as Camille Robcis illustrates, academic discourses of structural anthropology and Lacanian …

    Venita Datta•ARTICLE•Clio•2013

    Venita Datta•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2011

Paris at the fin de siècle was ‘a stage, a vast theater for herself and all the world’, wrote Roger Shattuck in his now classic work, The Banquet Years (1968). He was referring not only to the theatricality of fin-de-siècle politics and culture but also to the important role the theatre played in French national life. This book, the latest work of eminent French historian Christophe Charle, aims precisely to illustrate the key role which the thea…

In 1896 and again in 1897, Montmartre Bohemians, led by artist Adolphe Willette, organized the Fete de la Vache Enragee, a festival which parodied the traditional Fete du Boeuf Gras associated with Mardi Gras festivities. Instead of celebrating the fatted calf, a symbol of plenty, the Fete de la Vache Enragee was dedicated to the poor of the Butte, who were reduced to hunger and starvation or, in popular slang, 'manger de la vache enrage indeed, …
