Translating ambiguous and nonambiguous Words in a foreign Language
The research to be reported on in this paper was originally motivated by the finding that about 70% of the mistakes made by university students when translating from their mother tongue (Dutch) into their foreign language (French) were lexical in nature (NIENHUIS et al. 1989). The Use of Grammatical Information in Learners' Dictionaries
Much has been written about the role of grammar in the dictionary, and in particular the place and the nature of grammatical information in learners' dictionaries have been extensively debated. However, most of the debate has been about the completeness and the consistency of the grammatical information provided; very little has been said about the usefulness or the usability of the various systems that can be found in learners' dictionaries. Different types of tests will be necessary to tap all these aspects. Some general aspects of vocabulary testing are briefly discussed in this context. In the second part of the paper, a new type of test which aims at testing very high levels of L2 vocabula…
Intelligence, Social Class, and Social Context
At first sight, the reader may be surprised by the combination in one title of the three factors mentioned here. They are, in fact, quite different from one another, with intelligence being a strictly personal and individual characteristic, while the other two are social in nature, although social class may have considerably more individual overtones
Dictionaries for Learners of English
Recently four new dictionaries for learners of English have been published. In the first section of this article some thought is given to the relationship between foreign language learning and dictionary use. The steps that a learner needs to take when reading or writing a text in the foreign language are taken as a starting point for the discussion. This leads to a set of questions which are used in the subsequent sections for the evaluation of …
Où cherche-t-on dans le dictionnaire
When confronted with an expression composed of more than one word, the lexicographer has to decide where, i. e. under which. entry, he will record it. His task would be easier if he knew where the dictionary user will look up collocations of different types. This article investigates which criteria native speakers of French and Dutch may have when looking up more or less fixed phrases in a monolingual dictionary. Frequency, word class and syntact…
