Is a harsh childhood growth environment reflected in parental images and emotional distress in adulthood
Harsh parenting can predispose a child to emotional distress, whereas a supportive childhood environment furthers later subjective well-being. We investigated whether the mother’s self-reported assessment of her strictness and the adult offspring’s recollections of the disciplinary methods of their parents are reflected in the adult offspring’s recalled parental images and current emotional distress, anxiety and depression as assessed by the Hopk…
Autistic Adult Services Availability, Preferences, and User Experiences: Results From the Autism Spectrum Disorder in the European Union Survey
There is very little knowledge regarding autistic adult services, practices, and delivery. The study objective was to improve understanding of current services and practices for autistic adults and opportunities for improvement as part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder in the European Union (ASDEU) project. Separate survey versions were created for autistic adults, carers of autistic adults, and professionals in adult services. 2,009 persons respon…
Autistic Adult Health and Professional Perceptions of It: Evidence From the Asdeu Project
The Autism Spectrum Disorders in the European Union (ASDEU) survey investigated the knowledge and health service experiences of users and providers to generate new hypotheses and scientific investigations that would contribute to improvement in health care for autistic adults. An online survey designed for autistic adults, carers of autistic adults, and professionals in adult services was translated into 11 languages and distributed electronicall…
Parental Reports of Early Socioemotional and Behavioral Problems: Does the Father's View Make a Difference
Although both mothers and fathers are essential sources of information to address early socioemotional/behavioral (SEB) problems, there continues to be a dearth of studies considering both parental views. A sample of 208 toddlers (Mage = 19.3 months) was recruited through public child health centers. Both parents of 172 toddlers (76 boys, 96 girls) completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) 1-5 (T.M. Achenbach & L.A. Rescorla, 2000; Finnish tr…

Antisocial Propensity, Adolescent School Outcomes, and the Risk of Criminal Conviction
Data from the 1986 N orthern F inland B irth C ohort S tudy ( n = 4,645) were used to examine the influence of mid‐adolescent (age 15) school outcomes on late‐adolescent (ages 17–19) risk of criminal conviction. Consistent with social‐developmental theories of offending, we found that poor academic performance and reduced school attachment increase the risk of criminal conviction independently of pre‐existing differences in antisocial propensity …
Do inattention and hyperactivity symptoms equal scholastic impairment? evidence from three European cohorts
These results extend previous reports of scholastic impairment among children with clinically diagnosed ADHD to non-referred population samples from three European countries. Surveillance policies should be implemented in school systems to catch children in need of behavioral or scholastic support early
Characteristics of Mother-Infant Communicative Interaction: Relations to the Ratings of Maternal Sensitivity and Infant Co-Operation
The present article reports a study of communicative behaviour among mothers and infants who were grouped according to the ratings of sensitivity and co-operation, respectively. The participants were 27 Finnish-speaking mothers and their 10-month-old first-born infants (13 boys and 14 girls). The study is descriptive by nature, and the data were therefore treated in terms of descriptive parameters. According to the results, maternal sensitivity w…
The functions of maternal verbal responses to prelinguistic infants as predictors of early communicative and linguistic development
Maternal overall verbal responsiveness to prelinguistic infants at 0;10 was analysed by categorizing responses according to their function. In addition, the predictive validity of the response categories to the child’s communicative and linguistic development at 1;0 was examined. The participants were 27 Finnish-speaking mothers and their first-born infants. The results indicated several predictive relations between the functions of maternal verb…
Mother-child interaction on video compared with infant observation: Is five minutes enough time for assessment
In this small-scale preliminary study, we compared the correlation between assessments based on short videorecordings and infant observation. Five mother-infant dyads were assessed when the child was 1 year of age according to the Parent-Child Early Relational Assessment method (PCERA, 65 items) developed by Roseanne Clark (1985), using both observations covering 1 year and a 5-min videorecording. The agreement between two video raters was suffic…
Co-twin dependence, social interactions, and academic achievement: A population-based study
Relatively few studies have concentrated on the qualities or implications of the relationships between twins and their co-twins. We examined dependence between twin siblings and its impact on their social contacts, leisure-time activities and educational attainment in adolescence in a population-based sample of 5268 Finnish adolescent twins (FinnTwin16 study). We found that co-twin dependence varies significantly by zygosity and gender. Mothers a…
Some aspects of treatment and habilitation of children and adolescents with autistic disorder in Northern-Finland
Hospital records and data on the treatment/habilitation status of 187 children with autism aged 3-18 years were gathered from Northern Finland. The treatment programs and therapies varied, depending on the trained staff available. One-hundred and fifty-two (82.9%) children and adolescents with autism received more than one therapeutic intervention or specific training program. The most common therapies were physiotherapy as well as speech, occupa…
