Predicting Change in Brief Treatment for BPD
BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable relationships and maladaptive defense mechanisms. This study examined whether defensive functioning and the pervasiveness of core conflictual relationship themes (CCRT) predict symptom change following 10-session General Psychiatric Management (GPM) versus Treatment as Usual (TAU) in patients with BPD. METHOD: Sixty patients with BPD (75% female, mean age 29.6) in a randomize…
Empathy, mental health, and burnout during medical school
PURPOSE: The level of medical students' empathy may be related to mental health and burnout. Whether one predicts the other remains to be tested. The present study sought to test the reciprocal influences between empathy and mental health or burnout in a population of medical students using a longitudinal design. METHOD: From 2021 to 2024, a questionnaire was sent annually to all medical students at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). The q…
Metabolic disturbances are risk factors for readmission to psychiatric hospitals in non-smokers but not in smokers
The observed interaction between smoking and metabolic variables are compatible with a ceiling effect; metabolic variables increase the risk of readmission in non-smokers but not in smokers who are already at higher risk. Future studies should determine whether better metabolic monitoring and treatment can reduce readmission risk
MADRS single items differential changes among patients with melancholic and unspecified depression treated with ECT
MADRS score reductions were more substantial for M-MDD than U-MDD in both total and specific items following one month of ECT. Further research with larger samples is needed to clarify MADRS response differences after ECT between melancholic and unspecified depressive subtypes
The role of self-regulatory control processes in understanding aggressive ideations and behaviors
This study highlights the temporal link between aggressive ideations and behaviors in everyday life as well as the role of self-control in understanding aggressivity in the lap of time. Furthermore, we observed that expressions of anger (i.e., reactivity, as well as rumination) were central in the understanding of aggressive ideations and behaviors in the everyday life (i.e., at within-person variability at the state level)
