  • Methodological challenges in research on sexual risk behavior

    Kerstin E E Schröder, Michael P Carey et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Behavioral Medicine•2003

Assessing sexual behavior with self-report is essential to research on a variety of health topics, including pregnancy and infertility, sexually transmitted infections, and sexual health and functioning. Recent methodological research has provided new insights regarding the accuracy of self-reports of sexual behavior. We review these studies, paying particular attention to a promising new development: the use of computer-assisted assessments. The…

  • Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Brief HIV Knowledge Questionnaire

    Michael P Carey, Kerstin E E Schröder•ARTICLE•AIDS Education•2002

This research evaluated the psychometric properties of a brief self-report measure of HIV-related knowledge, the 18-item HIV Knowledge Questionnaire (HIV-KQ-18). Low-income men and women (N = 1,019) responded to 27 items that represented the domain of interest. Item analyses indicated that 18 items, with item-total correlations ranging from .24 to .57, be retained. Additional analyses demonstrated the HIV-KQ-18's internal consistency across sampl…

    Open Access•Kerstin E E Schröder, Stevan E Hobfoll et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 25

AIDS risk behavior and attitudes towards safer sex were studied in a sample of 666 African American and 626 European American women. Condom use, AIDS-related knowledge, risk perception, self-efficacy beliefs, attitudes and perceived partner attitudes, and an assertive coping style were analyzed with regard to mean differences and predictive power in both ethnic groups. Compared to European American women, African American women had less knowledge…

  • Distinguishing between Passive and Active Prosocial Coping

    Open Access•Stevan E Hobfoll, Kerstin E E Schröder•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 32

We examined the coping strategies of 1339, mostly African American (n = 666) and European American (n = 626), single, inner-city women in a cross-sectional study. We expected, and found through cluster analysis, four coping strategies: active-prosocial, active-asocial, passive-prosocial, and passive-asocial. It was hypothesized that women who were both active and prosocial in their general coping strategy would also report the most favorable copi…

  • Money Doesn't Talk, It Swears

    Open Access•Nicole Ennis, Nicole E Ennis et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2000•Cited by: 35•References: 56

We examined the differential impact of chronic versus acute economic stress on depressive mood among a sample of 1241 low‐income, single, European and African American women. Based on Hobfoll's (1988, 1989) conservation of resources (COR) theory, we predicted that acute resource loss would be more distressing than chronic economic lack. That is, although chronically impoverished conditions are stressful, the attendant resource losses created will…

  • Predicting Cardiac Patients' Quality of Life from the Characteristics of Their Spouses

    Open Access•Kerstin E E Schröder, Ralf Schwarzer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 44

Recovery from surgery can be facilitated by personal and social resources such as perceived self-efficacy and social support. Moreover, the existence of a social network and the behavior of its members can also have a positive effect. Patients ( N = 381; 302 men, 79 women) undergoing heart surgery were surveyed once before and twice after surgery. In addition, 114 social-network members (18 men, 96 women), most of them spouses, reported about the…
