  • Applying a Critical Disability Studies Lens to Young Adult Literature

Melissa Schieble, David J Connor•ARTICLE•Research in the Teaching of English•2025

This project is an interdisciplinary endeavor to connect research in the teaching of English with Critical Disability Studies, an intersection that is crucial to disrupting ableism and creating more liberatory schooling and societal contexts that embrace broader notions of human differences. Invoking critical content analysis of five young adult novels that depict characters with Tourette syndrome (TS), we asked, how are various models for unders…

  • Critical Inquiry Groups as Sites for Learning about Race and Racism

    Open Access•Audrey Lucero, Amy Vetter et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2025•Referências: 46

In critical inquiry groups, teachers work together to intentionally examine aspects of professional practice and provide support for transforming those practices over time. We explore how one such group engaged in dialogue about race in the context of their literacy/ELA instruction. We use the concepts of race-intentionality and race-evasiveness given by Chang-Bacon and the critical talk moves given by Vetter et al. to examine how interactional p…

  • Special Issue

    Open Access•Audrey Lucero, Melissa Schieble et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2025•Referências: 2

For this special issue, our collection of papers foregrounds how critical teacher learning is lifelong, hyper-contextual heart work. We bring together a collection of four articles that broaden the field's capacity to envision spaces for teacher learning about systems of inequity beyond traditional professional development approaches. Each article in this special issue demonstrates how critical teacher learning occurs in various contexts, a vast …

  • Embodying Tourette’s Syndrome in Young Adult Literature

    David J Connor, Melissa Schieble•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary & Cultural…•2024

The article foregrounds two protagonists with Tourette Syndrome (TS) from contemporary Young Adult (YA) novels written by authors with TS. Grounded in the interdisciplinary field of cultural disability studies in education (CDSE), each protagonist is analyzed for (1) physical manifestations of TS (external depiction), (2) emotional reactions about having TS (internal depiction), and (3) the response of parents and family members, friends, acquain…

  • Examining silences in an English teacher inquiry group focused on critical conversations

Open Access•Amy Vetter, Melissa Schieble et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics and Education•2022

  • Critical talk moves in critical conversations

Amy Vetter, Melissa Schieble et al.•ARTICLE•English in Education•2021

Critical conversations take on heightened importance with current tensions about issues involving race, income inequality, sexual orientation, and gender identity, both locally and globally. These tensions demonstrate a dire need for classroom discussions about literature to serve as a space where youth engage in rigorous, critical conversations about institutionalised forms of privilege and oppression and learn how to act as agents of change. To…

  • Promoting Empathetic Reading With Between Shades of Gray Through a Global Blogging Project

    Open Access•Melissa Schieble, Lolita Kucinskiene•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent & Adult…•2019

The authors drew on empirical data from a blogging project that brought English teachers from the United States and Lithuania together online to discuss the young adult novel Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. The novel tells the story of a 15‐year‐old girl, Lina, and her family, who are forcibly separated and deported to a Siberian labor camp under Stalin's occupation of the Baltic States during World War II . The authors argue that the ped…

  • Observing Teacher Identities through Video Analysis

Amy Vetter, Melissa Schieble•BOOK•Observing Teacher Identities…•2015

  • A Discourse Analytic Approach to Video Analysis of Teaching

Open Access•Melissa Schieble, Amy Vetter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Teacher Education•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 24

The authors present findings from a qualitative study of an experience that supports teacher candidates to use discourse analysis and positioning theory to analyze videos of their practice during student teaching. The research relies on the theoretical concept that learning to teach is an identity process. In particular, teachers construct and enact their identities during moment-to-moment interactions with students, colleagues, and parents. Usin…

  • Critical Conversations on Whiteness With Young Adult Literature

    Open Access•Melissa Schieble•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent & Adult…•2012

In this article, the author argues that whiteness remains an overwhelmingly absent dimension in literacy teaching that addresses systems of power from a critical perspective. One way literacy teachers may bring this dimension more explicitly into the classroom is by facilitating critical conversations on whiteness with young adult literature. As whiteness is neither a fixed nor static category, the author analyzes whiteness as intersected with mu…

  • A critical discourse analysis of teachers' views on LGBT literature

    Open Access•Melissa Schieble•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2012•Citada por: 5•Referências: 13

This article presents a thread of discussion posted to a web-based forum in the context of a children's literature course in one teacher education program in the USA. Participants in the virtual discussion include three preservice elementary teachers and the course instructor (author) on the subject of bringing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) literature into the elementary classroom. Classroom teachers who lead discussions about rac…

  • Reading Between the Lines of Reader Response

    Melissa Schieble, Melissa B Schieble•ARTICLE•Changing English•2010

In this article, the author challenges English teachers of literature to examine applications of reader response theory in teaching reading which posit that readers approach a text from two stances: 'aesthetic' (emotional) or 'efferent' (literal). The essay presents a case study of pre‐service English teachers and adolescents' web‐based discussions about a work of young adult fiction based on a transgendered character. The study highlights how th…
