Laypeople Use Institutional Information Cues in Judging the Plausibility of Research Findings
Mediatization of science communication facilitates broader access to scientific knowledge. However, in the post-truth era, it makes the task of critical evaluation of science-based information more challenging than ever for laypeople. The authors conducted a factorial survey as a part of a nationally representative Russian survey panel to evaluate the influence of institutional information cues on laypersons’ plausibility judgments. The findings …
Fully Labeled Scales Are More Cognitively Demanding
This article investigates cognitive load in fully labeled and end-labeled Likert-type scales. We compared cognitive load between two conditions using different methods such as pupillometry, completion times, and subjective evaluation of mental effort. We conducted a laboratory experiment ( N = 170) using eye-tracking technology to measure pupil dilation while respondents completed a web survey. The mean pupil diameter was larger in the fully labe…
AI Value Alignment and Sociology of Morality
Different path to happiness
Numerous studies show that prosocial behavior leads to positive emotional outcomes for the actor, yet does it matter, who the beneficiary is? The present paper explores differential effects of helping acts towards close versus distant recipients on subjective well-being and the role that basic psychological needs play in this relationship. Two studies using event-recall ( N = 127) and interventional ( N = 305) designs in Russian samples were cond…

Weighing the moral worth of altruistic actions
In this article, we consider the problem of a discrepancy between, on the one hand, lay prescriptive judgments on the necessity of altruistic actions and, on the other, attributing moral worth to these actions. Based on Kantian theory of morality, we hypothesized that lay attributions of the moral worth of altruistic actions would be inversely related to normative ought-judgments according to which these actions should be performed, as having pos…
Morality, Ethics
Pupil diameter dynamics as an indicator of the respondent’s cognitive load
In recent years, the increase in general interest in methods for measuring cognitive load and subjectively perceived mental effort when solving various tasks and in the interpersonal communication was accompanied by an increase in the specific interest of social researchers in the multimodal assessment of the cognitive load of interviewers and respondents based on objective and subjective indicators, including paradata and webcam data, in order t…
The Concept of Value in Sociological Theory
Causality and Blame Judgments of Negative Side Effects of Actions May Differ for Different Institutional Domains
Cognitive factors are known to influence lay assessments of causality and blame for negative side effects of intentional actions but specific social determinants of such assessments remain relatively unexplored. In a full-factorial, intraindividual experiment using two blocks of analogous vignettes constructed for two particular institutional action domains (“medical” and “corporate dress code”), we tested the propositions that causality and blam…

Invitation Design Elements in Web Surveys – Can One Ignore Interactions
This paper investigates the effects on response and breakoff rates in Web surveys of e-mail invitation design elements including: subject line, estimated survey duration, and invitation length. The analysis is focused not only on the main effects, but also on an issue which has not yet been studied systematically: interaction effects between these design elements. A factorial complete block design Web experiment – among students, faculty, and adm…
