Long term dynamics in a mediterranean mountainous landscape. Exploring land use and social strategies in Varica Virtudes (2nd-1st millennia BCE, Southeastern Iberia)
Research on Mediterranean mountain landscapes continues to be challenged by limited empirical knowledge and the persistence of traditional assumptions, such as their alleged isolation, statism and marginality. We present the results of a multiproxy and multiscale study in the Varica Virtudes mountain (Taibilla River Basin, southwestern Iberian Peninsula), integrating landscape studies and archaeological excavation, microstratigraphic techniques, …
Mapping monumentality in a Roman colony: A non-invasive archaeological approach to the forum of Colonia Salaria (Spain)
Integrated survey reveals urban planning in a previously unexplored colony. • Terraced opus caementicium architecture defines a hierarchised colonial forum. • GPR detects subsurface alignments consistent with public architecture. • Surface artefact patterns distinguish civic and domestic activity zones. • Digital enhancement of historical aerial photos improves architectural detection. Roman colonies played a key role in the articulation of imper…
The Songon-M'Brathé shell midden (Ivory Coast): Microstratigraphic evidence of human activities and paleoenvironmental evolution in the Late Holocene
This study explores the site formation and paleoenvironmental evolution of the Songon-M’Brathé shell midden in Ivory Coast through microstratigraphic analysis. Using geoarchaeological and dating techniques—including micromorphology, μ-XRF elemental mapping, radiocarbon dating, and thermoluminescence—the human occupation at the site is dated from the 7th to the 17th centuries CE. The earliest deposits reflect periodic flooding from a paleochannel …
Dealing with the archaeological invisibility of the Iberian mints: A technological and contextual analysis of the first stone mould for blank coin production found in Hispania
Roman farmers in eastern Iberia: A spatial, geoarchaeological and bioarchaeological approach to agrarian strategies
Impact of trading networks on a small island at the end of Late Antiquity: Isla del Fraile
This terrestrial and underwater archaeological research project around a Mediterranean islet identifies that it was a commercial centre during the fifth century AD. The results shed light on Late Roman island occupation dynamics
The Urban Biography of a Mauritanian City: Microstratigraphic Analysis of the Eastern Quarter of Tamuda (Morocco)
The lack of vertical stratigraphic sondages and open area excavations constitutes a challenge to understanding Mauritanian urbanism. This makes the characterization of the spatio-temporal evolution of Mauritanian towns a difficult task. Systematic excavations carried out in Tamuda by several research teams in the twentieth century provided vertical and horizontal views of Mauritanian urbanism. Our study offers, for the first time, a high-resoluti…
Microstratigraphic analysis of the main Roman road in Hispania: The Via Augusta where it passes through the Ianus Augustus (Mengíbar, Spain)
Roman roads are omnipresent in the Mediterranean basin. Despite the methodological advances achieved, interdisciplinary studies including geoarchaeological techniques are still rare. The aim of this study is to offer a microstratigraphic analysis of an important Roman road in order to characterise the raw materials and construction techniques used to build it and their evolution over time. Our research focuses on theViaAugusta, the longest road i…
Ianus Augustus, Caput Viae (Mengíbar, Spain): An interprovincial monumental border in Roman Hispania
Recent research undertaken as part of the Iliturgi Project has located the remains of an Early Imperial building complex linked to the Via Augusta. They include the foundations of an arch and a monumental platform whose size and characteristics allow it to be identified as the Ianus Augustus, a monumental complex near the River Baetis that marked the limit between the Roman provinces of Baetica and Tarraconensis. Its location makes it a reference…

The archaeological excavation campaign carried out during the year 2014 on the plateau of Giribaile had the objectives of a) providing better knowledge of the inner structure of the oppidum and its urban pattern and b) documenting the floor of one house enclosed within Area 3. The archaeological excavation of Area 3 made it possible to characterise a multi-functional structure from fourth and third centuries BCE inside the urban pattern. Carpolog…
“Stairway to Tarteso’s Heaven”: La Escalera Monumental Del Yacimiento De Casas Del Turuñuelo (Guareña, Badajoz, España).
Site formation processes and urban transformations during Late Antiquity from a high‐resolution geoarchaeological perspective: Baelo Claudia , Spain
To understand abandonment processes and secondary uses of public buildings is a key‐challenge to recognize the scope of the urban transformations in Roman cities during Late Antiquity. In this sense, administrative and religious public spaces such as the fora underwent a great variety of transformations resulting in the genesis of a complex stratigraphy of anthropogenic and natural deposits. Baelo Claudia is a well‐known Roman city located in the…

A better understanding of villae and other forms of rural settlement has enriched the study of ancient rural landscapes. These agricultural installations are, in many cases, the only visible archaeological records of a lost reality of the Roman agrarian landscape: the fundi. In this paper, we propose a methodology to identify Roman cadasters, using the qualitative and quantitative variables that villae offer: viewshed, topographic prominence, chr…

Knapping methods and techniques in the bracelets quarry of Cortijo Cevico (Loja, Granada)
The stone bracelets are one of the most outstanding elements of personal ornaments of the ancient Neolithic in Western Mediterranean and the South of the Iberian Peninsula (5500-4800 cal. BCE). These bracelets are considered an element of cultural identity and a chronological marker of the first Neolithic societies in these areas. The study of the production processes of this ornament has brought a new approach to social relations of the early Ne…
