  • The 2022 State of Ohio Families: Challenges and Promises

    Open Access•Jacqueline Kirby Wilkins, James S Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 14

With nearly 80 million families residing in the United States, the health and well-being of families continue to be a popular area of inquiry and research, especially as the country experiences a variety of challenges as well as opportunities in a unique time in its history—socially, politically, and economically. Ohio, like many states, is experiencing changes in the demographic makeup of its population, changes in family formation, gaps in econ…

  • Variations in grandfathering: Characteristics of involved, passive, and disengaged grandfathers

    James S Bates, Alan C Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Grandfather involvement is comprised of three constructs, namely, contact frequency, intergenerational commitment, and participation in activities, and refers to grandfathers’ efforts to develop and maintain relationships with grandchildren. From these, recent research has identified three distinct grandfathering typologies or styles, including, involved, passive, and disengaged. In this study, we use multinomial logistic regression to explore wh…

During this multi-session program, grandfather and grandchild participants engage in several activities which include creating an electronic memory book as well as grilling and eating food together. They learn through facilitated…

  • Positive Affect and Depressive Symptoms: What Dimensions of Grandfather Involvement Matter

    James S Bates, Alan C Taylor•ARTICLE•Journal of Intergenerational…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 16

The mental health of middle-aged and older men is an understudied dimension of human development that has implications for grandfathers’ involvement in the lives of their grandchildren. Grandfather involvement is defined as the degree of engagement in the process of building and maintaining relationships with grandchildren and comprises the concepts of participation in activities, commitment, and contact frequency. Using structural equation model…

  • Activities That Strengthen Relational Bonds Between Latter-day Saint Grandfathers and Their Adult Grandchildren

    Alan C Taylor, James S Bates•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion, Spirituality…•2014

Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight Latter-day Saint (LDS) grandfathers and their adult grandsons and adult granddaughters regarding actions they implemented to build and maintain their relational bonds. Both grandfathers’ grandchildren were found to be highly involved in intergenerational relationship-building activities, although gender differences were found among grandsons and granddaughters. Four overa…

  • Grandfather Involvement: Contact Frequency, Participation in Activities, and Commitment

    Open Access•James S Bates, Alan C Taylor•ARTICLE•The Journal of Men s Studies•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 13

Notwithstanding the recent growth in scholarship about grandparents and the sustained interest in fatherhood, there has been limited attention paid to the study of grandfathers. Few strides have been made to understand grandfathering behaviors and attitudes, and little is known about the relationships grandfathers develop and maintain with grandchildren. We suggest one reason for this trend is the lack of theoretical and conceptual groundwork nee…

  • Male Kin Relationships: Grandfathers, Grandsons, and Generativity

    James S Bates, Todd L Goodsell•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 43

In a qualitative interview study of narratives grandsons told about their grandfathers (n = 14), we found evidence that grandsons perceived the role of grandfathers to be generative on several dimensions. Our analysis centered on the influence grandfathers had on the meanings grandsons made about fatherhood. All seven generative work domains, along with nine concepts describing grandfathers' generative efforts (consciousness of the family's linea…

  • Fatherhood stories: Grandparents, grandchildren, and gender differences

    Open Access•Todd L Goodsell, James S Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 29

The meanings of fatherhood conveyed in grandparent stories told by adult grandchildren vary both by the sex of the grandchild and by the sex of the grandparent who figures in the story. An inductive analysis was conducted of fatherhood stories involving grandparents as told by adult grandchildren ( N = 79). Findings suggest that grandsons drew on stories about grandparents to present fatherhood as centered on work and recreation, and to suggest t…

  • Generative Grandfathering: A Conceptual Framework for Nurturing Grandchildren

    James S Bates•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 53

Empirical research on grandfather–grandchild relationships is small and undeveloped and has not enjoyed systematic theory construction. The weak theory-research connections in the extant grandfather literature have resulted in a body of research that is not cohesive and lacks scope and depth. To address these criticisms, I propose here a conceptual framework for understanding and investigating grandfathering and grandfather–grandchild relationshi…
