  • A General Class of Social Distance Measures

    Open Access•G K Brown, Amie Langer et al.•ARTICLE•Political Analysis•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Measures of diversity and disparity within a population are used for investigating a range of developmental outcomes, but often by employing “off-the-shelf” indicators that may not be theoretically appropriate for the hypotheses under investigation. In this article, we proposed a general class of social distance measures that both enables us to see the conceptual relationship between different existing measures of heterogeneity more clearly and i…

  • Contesting the Boundaries of Religion in Social Mobilization

    Open Access•Joe Devine, G K Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of South Asian Development•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 23

This article seeks to contribute to an understanding of the dynamics of religion in social mobilization. It argues that existing approaches to the study of the role of religion in social mobilization have been insufficiently nuanced and have failed to probe the multiple and often contradictory influences that religion can have on mobilization channels. On the basis of three qualitative case studies from Malaysia, Bangladesh and the United Kingdom…

  • Malaysia in 2012

    G K Brown•ARTICLE•Southeast Asian affairs•2013

Southeast Asian Affairs is the only one of its kind: a comprehensive annual review devoted to the international relations, politics, and economies of the region and its nation-states. The collected volumes of Southeast Asian Affairs have become a compendium documenting the dynamic evolution of regional and national developments in Southeast Asia from the end of the ‘second’ Vietnam War to the alarms and struggles of today. Over the years, the edi…

  • From ideas to hegemony

    Rochana Bajpai, G K Brown•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2013•Cited by: 2

This article proposes a new approach to hegemony, recast as a tool to capture the power of ideas at the systemic level. Hegemony is conceptualized as a condition in which a set of ideas is accepted by political actors with conflicting interests and as the outcome of a process of discursive interaction. Three types of ideational contestation are distinguished—confrontation, configuration and consistency: hegemony emerges as contestation shifts bet…

  • Ethnic Diversity and Economic Instability in Africa

Open Access•Bruce J Berman, Sadako Ogata et al.•BOOK•Ethnic Diversity and Economic…•2012

There is growing consensus in the development economics literature that ethnic diversity is a very significant factor in explaining Africa's poor economic performance. Ethnic Diversity and Economic Instability in Africa challenges this conventional wisdom. Drawing on the insights of historians, anthropologists and political scientists as well as development economists, this book questions whether ethnicity is the most useful organising principle …

  • Horizontal inequalities and conflict

G K Brown, Amie Langer et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict Security and Development•2010

In order to explain the emergence of violent conflicts, an increasing number of academic studies have focused on the role of inequalities between ‘culturally’ defined groups or ‘horizontal inequalities’. The concept and theory of horizontal inequalities is also gaining purchase in donor agencies and the broader international development community, particularly in the context of specific countries undergoing or recently emerged from violent confli…

  • Legible Pluralism

    G K Brown•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 11

This study is concerned with the changing social and political role of religion as a constitutive element in ethnic identity in Malaysia, particularly among the Muslim Malay community. Its concern is both to offer an explanation of these changing dynamics and also to enquire as to how these dynamics might inform our theoretical understanding of 'ethnicity' itself. While the Islamic religion has always been a core element of the ethnic identity of…

    G K Brown•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 5

  • Regional Autonomy, Spatial Disparity and Ethnoregional Protest in Contemporary Democracies

    G K Brown•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 22

This paper utilizes quantitative methods to examine the dynamics of ethnoregional protest in contemporary democratic states. The paper tests hypotheses relating the incidence of ethnoregional protest to the extent of regional autonomy, spatial disparity and ethnic demography. The findings suggest that relatively wealthy regions and those that are highly ethnically distinct from the rest of the country are more likely to experience ethnic protest,…

  • Decentralisation and conflict

    G K Brown•ARTICLE•Conflict Security and Development•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 11

  • Playing the (non)ethnic card

    G K Brown•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2005•Cited by: 4•References: 1

This paper examines the ethnic determinants of constituency delineations and voting patterns in West Malaysia over the past five general elections, paying particular attention to the ramifications of the 2002 re-delineation exercise. I show that the 2002 re-delineation exercise reduced markedly the ethnic bias of the electoral system yet increased the overall imbalance in constituency size. I then argue that the old electoral logic of small Malay…

  • The Rough and Rosy Road

    G K Brown, Graham Brown•ARTICLE•Pacific Affairs•2005•Cited by: 11

This article examines the politics of state media control in Malaysia, with a particular focus on the period since the economic and political turmoil of 1997 and 1998. It argues that the Barisan Nasional (BN) regime has pursued a two-pronged approach to media control, through a strategy of legislative regulation and corporate ownership. Regulatory controls such as stringent printing permit legislation have been weakened by the rise of the Interne…

    Open Access•G K Brown, Graham Brown•ARTICLE•Urban History•1978•References: 1

‘The number of marriages in a nation perhaps fluctuates independently of external causes, but it is a fair deduction from the facts, that the Marriage Returns in England point out periods of prosperity little less distinctly than the funds measure the hopes and fears of the money market. If the one is the barometer of credit, the other is the barometer of prosperity, present in part, but future, expected, anticipated, in still greater part.’ This…
