  • Holding space for student teachers: Engaged pedagogy in the face of discrimination

Open Access•Yael Thomas Cameron, Eunice Gaerlan et al.•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2026

In this article, a group of teacher educators from Aotearoa New Zealand consider what it might mean to support student teachers who have disclosed experiences of racial, gendered, and/or queerphobic discrimination during professional practice placements. Through our personal stories, grounded in bell hooks’ engaged pedagogy and education as the practice of freedom, we theorize our own experiences of educational discrimination via a phenomenology …

  • Romantasy, Virginity and Other Fictions

    Open Access•Toni Ingram•ARTICLE•Sexuality & Culture•2026

Virginity is a gendered, racialised, and classed construct disproportionately applied to girls and young women. As a disciplinary mechanism, purity ideals uphold the sexual double standard and regulate femininity through discourses of morality, respectability and innocence. Ideals surrounding ‘correct’ virginity loss also continue to shape female sexuality, including within youth-oriented popular culture and sexuality education. Against this back…

  • Navigating the rapids of today’s research expectations: What is ‘quality research’ in education in Aotearoa New Zealand?

Open Access•Georgina Tuari Stewart, Mary M Jacobs et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2026

This collective writing was catalysed by a request from our Faculty Research Office for the School of Education to provide a list of journals that publish ‘quality research’ in education. Tasked with compiling this list, the first author invited all academic staff to name up to three journal titles that they considered fitted this description. The list was already well over 50 titles long, based on responses from fewer than half of the academic s…

  • Romantasy and the quest for cliteracy

    Open Access•Toni Ingram•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2026

Romantasy – a hybrid genre of romance and fantasy – is well known for its explicit ‘spicy’ content. Like romance fiction, female desire and pleasure are central to the narrative. Drawing on textual analysis from three popular romantasy series, this article examines the genre’s potential to foster cultural cliteracy: or the recognition and understanding of the clitoris as a central site of sexual pleasure. It explores how depictions of clitoral st…

  • Sexuality-Assemblages, Hyphens, and the In-Between

    Open Access•Toni Ingram•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2025

Sexuality-assemblages emphasize a relational more-than-human approach to conceptualizing the becoming of sexuality. This article brings together Fine’s notion of “working the hyphen” with a new materialist ontology of sexuality, to explore the space and form of the hyphen within the sexuality-assemblage. In “working” the sexuality-assemblage hyphen, I explore the onto-epistemological space it inhabits, who or what is implicated at this material a…

  • A new materialist (re)configuring of sexuality, age and the discourse of ‘childhood innocence

    Open Access•Toni Ingram, Louisa Allen•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 51

This article explores the potential of feminist new materialisms for rethinking enduring debates that cohere around children, sexuality, age and ‘childhood innocence’. A new materialist ontology of sexuality and Karen Barad's concept of spacetimemattering are employed to conceptualise sexuality as an emergent becoming of relational material‐discursive forces. Within this paradigm, mobilisation of arguments about ‘sexual innocence and readiness’ b…

  • The material-discursive phenomena of queer-bodies, clothing and schooling

    Open Access•Toni Ingram•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 41

This article draws on feminist new materialist theory to examine the relations in-between queer-bodies, clothing and the schooling environment.Working with Karen Barad's agential realist concepts of intra-action and entanglement, queer-bodies and clothing are conceptualized as material-discursive phenomena, co-constitutive and emergent through their entangled relations.Through this approach, school uniforms, spatial environments, practices such a…

  • (Un)romantic Becomings: Girls, Sexuality-assemblages, and the School Ball

    Toni Ingram•ARTICLE•Girlhood Studies•2022•Cited by: 4

Popular culture and media often portray school balls and proms as romantic spaces and having a date is perceived as the norm. While gender(ed) and heterosexual discourses continue to shape young people’s experiences, girls’ understandings of the school ball do not necessarily conform to dominant ideas. In this article, I draw on a new materialist ontology of sexuality to explore the relations in-between girls, dates, and the school ball. I examin…

  • I feel pretty: Beauty as an Affective-Material Process

    Open Access•Toni Ingram•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 40

This article explores the potential of feminist new materialisms and theories of affect for reframing how we might think about beauty and the body. Through an exploration of girls, beauty and the school ball (prom), the article engages with Karen Barad's concept of intra-action to conceptualise beauty as an affective-material process. This perspective involves an ontological shift in how girls, bodies and beauty are understood; from thinking abou…
