  • The study demands and resources scale

Open Access•Llewellyn Ellardus Van Zyl, Rébecca Shankland et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

The Study Demands and Resources Scale (SDRS) has shown promise as a valid and reliable measure for measuring students’ specific study demands and -resources. However, there is no evidence as to its psychometric properties outside of the original context in which it was developed. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the SDRS in a cross-national student population through examining its longitudinal factorial validity, internal…

  • Grit Across Nations

Open Access•Llewellyn Ellardus Van Zyl, Babet Heijenk et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Happiness Studies•2022

Despite its popularity in practice, the Grit-O Scale has shown inconsistent factorial structures and differing levels of internal consistency in samples outside the USA. The validity of the Grit-O Scale in different contexts is, therefore, questionable. As such, the purpose of this paper was to determine whether the Grit-O Scale could be used as a valid and reliable measure to compare grit across different nations. Specifically, the aim was to in…

  • Hormonal changes of intimate partner violence perpetrators in response to brief social contact with women

    Open Access•Leander Van Der Meij, Matias M Pulopulos et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 39

This study investigated whether men with a history of real‐life aggressive, dominant behavior show increases in testosterone and cortisol levels after brief social contact with women. Furthermore, we tested the prediction that such changes in hormones would be larger than those observed previously in young male students. Sixty‐seven male participants convicted of intimate partner violence (IPV) either had brief social contact with a female confed…

  • The role of self-control and sociosexual orientation in partner selection

    Open Access•Tila M Pronk, Johan C Karremans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 48

Self-control is a crucial factor in maintaining an established romantic relationship, but its role in relationship formation is understudied. The current study tested whether trait self-control is related to a more selective approach toward romantic partners. Over 4 years, we organized 11 speed-date events at which a total of 342 single, heterosexual participants met potential partners. Our results indicated that there was no main effect of self-…

Open Access•Leander Van Der Meij, Mercedes Almela et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2013

We do not agree with the interpretation and evaluation of our article by Voracek. We feel that our results and our interpretation of the results are supported by our data analyses and do add to the current understanding of the relationship between 2D:4D and personality. We feel confident we can address many, if not all, of Voracek's criticisms. However, we fully agree that 2D:4D research would benefit from more replication and from the use of lar…

It has been shown that a smaller ratio between the length of the second and fourth digit (2 D :4 D ) is an indicator of the exposure to prenatal testosterone ( T ). This study measured the 2 D :4 D of men and assessed dominance as a personality trait to investigate indirectly if the exposure to prenatal T is related to a dominant personality later in life. Results showed that men had a more aggressive dominant personality when having a more mascu…
