Effects of Transportation on Racial/Ethnic Diversity of National Park Visitors
The demographic composition of the United States is increasingly diverse, but racial/ethnic minority groups are substantially underrepresented in visiting national parks. Transportation is needed to provide access to national parks but may not be equally accessible to all groups in society. This study uses a general population survey of New York City residents to examine the role of transportation in visiting national parks by three racial/ethnic…

The Intersection of Race/Ethnicity and Gender in Occupational Segregation: Changes over Time in the Contemporary United States
In this article, we examine changes in the types of occupations that members of various racial/ethnic-gender groups have entered. We are interested in two trends that we believe may have contributed to differences in occupational concentration: budget reductions and policy changes in Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforcement procedures, and the continuing increases in women's educational attainment. Using whites, African American…

Standards of Quality for Parks and Protected Areas: Applying Normative Theory and Methods in U.S. National Parks
Indicators and standards of quality have become an important component of contemporary management frameworks designed to help protect park resources and the quality of the visitor experience. Normative theory and related empirical methods have been adapted from sociology and applied to surveys of park visitors and other stakeholders to help guide the formulation of standards of quality. This article reviews this growing body of research and ident…
The Ethnic, Race, and Gender Gaps in Workplace Authority: Changes over Time in the United States
We analyze factors explaining differences in hierarchical authority between men and women within and across categories of race and ethnicity in two time periods, finding that the processes leading to authority within the workplace operate differently by gender than by race or ethnicity. The demand-side factor, percentage of women in an occupation, helps explain authority differences between men and women in most groups. Supply-side factors, and, …
Norm Crystallization: Measurement and Comparative Analysis
Normative theory and methods have become increasingly important in outdoor recreation research and management as an approach to formulating standards of quality in parks and related areas. An important issue associated with this research is the level of agreement or consensus about social norms called crystallization. A new measure, Van der Eijk's measure of agreement (A), is proposed and applied in this study. A test of the effect of potential i…

The Relationship Between Visitor-Based Standards of Quality and Existing Conditions in Parks and Outdoor Recreation
Parks and related areas are increasingly adopting management-by-objectives/indicator-based frameworks to protect resources and the quality of visitor experiences. Indicator-based frameworks rely on development of indicators and standards of quality, and research has been developed to measure visitor-based standards of quality. In this research approach, visitors to parks and related areas judge the acceptability of a range of recreation-related i…
Measuring opportunity
In American political discourse, a distinction is often made between inequality of condition and inequality of opportunity. The former involves the distribution of valued rewards in society, while the latter has to do with access to these rewards. In terms of scientific work, much more progress has been made on the study of inequality of condition than on the study of inequality of opportunity. This paper proposes an approach to defining and meas…
The Puzzle of Lenski's Curve
This article responds to calls for more attention to theoretical issues in the study of social stratification and mobility. As a starting point, I reconsider Lenski's Power and Privilege, the last bold effort to create a general theory of social stratification. One of Lenski's most interesting assertions was that the amount of inequality would `vary directly with the size of a society's surplus'. However, the mechanisms underlying this relation w…

Religion as an Independent Variable: Revisiting the Weberian Hypothesis
Studies in the sociology of religion generally assume "religion" to be causal with little or no attention paid to the theoretical justification or basis for such a claim. We argue in this paper that most such studies fail to satisfy the conditions for causal inference. Further, Weber, whom sociologists of religion often cite when theoretical claims are made, at worse never proposes religion as an independent variable and, at best is very ambiguou…

Social change and status attainment among men and women in contemporary Poland
This paper tests hypotheses concerning the relationship between social change and occupational and earnings attainment among men and women in contemporary Poland. Utilizing national-level survey data from 1982, 1987, and 1991-3, we examine the effects of social background, educational attainment, and work experience on occupational prestige and earnings. Findings from regression and multilevel models reveal complex patterns of stability and chang…

The Process of Status Attainment Among Men in Poland, The U.S., and West Germany
Hypotheses concerning similarities and differences in the process of individual status attainment are testedfor men in Poland, the U.S., and West Germany. In contrast to previous comparative studies of stratification, which often focus on industrialism arguments to generate hypotheses, I consider the impact of the educational systems of the three societies on the attainment process. The timing and mechanisms of selection into the educational syst…

The African development dilemma revisited: Theoretical and empirical explorations
This article considers the issue of ethnic diversity in black Africa. In the first part of the article we discuss the various implications and possible consequences of the extensive ethnic diversity that characterizes most African countries, paying special attention to the relationship between the multi-ethnic state and socio-economic development. In the second part of the article we delve more deeply into the nature of ethnic diversity in contem…
