What lies in the shadows
This paper traces the social construction of 'high risk' targets in biomedical public health prevention programmes. We ask: what are the intended and unintended effects of such targeted approaches? Who and what do they render visible and invisible? We are particularly interested in exploring the effects of public health targeting strategies on those who remain outside of these targeted approaches. Although targeted public health approaches are de…
Acceptability of secondary distribution of HIV self-testing kits in central Kenya
The secondary distribution of HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits has the potential to improve access and uptake of HIV testing. This study assessed the acceptability of secondary distribution of HIVST by people living with HIV (PLHIV) to their sexual partners in Central Kenya and explored the broader perspectives on this strategy. Conducted between November 2019 and April 2023, the study was nested within an interventional study that implemented two a…
The long last mile of access to essential medicines
This study examines the last mile barriers to HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in Kenya and Ireland, highlighting its role in reducing HIV infection among high-risk individuals. Despite PrEP's efficacy, timely access and consistent use are hindered by several obstacles. Using qualitative methods, the study involved 54 interviews (40 in Kenya and 14 in Ireland) and 4 focus group discussions in Kenya, engaging activists, healthcare providers, po…
The Social Meanings of Artifacts
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, research has explored various aspects of face mask use. While most of the research explores their effectiveness to prevent the spread of the virus, a growing body of literature has found that using face masks also has social meaning. But what social meaning does it have, and how does this meaning express itself in people's practice? Based on 413 qualitative interviews with residents in five European c…
Democratic research
The sudden and dramatic advent of the COVID-19 pandemic led to urgent demands for timely, relevant, yet rigorous research. This paper discusses the origin, design, and execution of the SolPan research commons, a large-scale, international, comparative, qualitative research project that sought to respond to the need for knowledge among researchers and policymakers in times of crisis. The form of organization as a research commons is characterized …
Protection at First Sexual Intercourse Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Kenya
“Now that PrEP is reducing the risk of transmission of HIV, why then do you still insist that we use condoms?” the condom quandary among PrEP users and health care providers in Kenya
Communication around condom use in the context of PrEP services presents a potential conundrum for patients and providers. Within the Partners Scale-Up Project, which supports integration of PrEP delivery in HIV care clinics, we interviewed 41 providers and 61 PrEP users and identified themes relating to condom messaging and use. Most providers counselled PrEP initiators to always use both PrEP and condoms, except when trying to conceive. However…
Normative positions towards Covid-19 contact-tracing apps
Mobile applications for digital contact tracing have been developed and introduced around the world in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Proposed as a tool to support 'traditional' forms of contact-tracing carried out to monitor contagion, these apps have triggered an intense debate with respect to their legal and ethical permissibility, social desirability and general feasibility. Based on a large-scale study including qualitative data from 349…
