    François Rocher•ARTICLE•Recherches sociographiques•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 20

  • The Challenges of a Secular Quebec

Lucia Ferretti, François Rocher et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•The Challenges of a Secular Quebec•2023

The Challenges of a Secular Quebec opens up the debates that gave rise to a controversial law on state religious neutrality, taking an open-minded look at how secularism is understood and how it has imposed itself in the Quebec social space.

    Open Access•François Rocher•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2023•Cited by: 8•References: 50

This article is interested in the shift of the object of hostility, which historically fuelled Quebec nationalism. The main targets of discontent have long been the ‘rest of Canada’ and the lower socio‐economic status of Francophones. After the 1995 independence referendum, the feeling of dissatisfaction with Canada, and even resentment, gradually faded. This retreating within Quebec's borders has led many French‐speaking Quebecers to become conc…

  • The Life and Death of an Issue

    Open Access•François Rocher•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 47

How has English-speaking Canadian political science conceived of the relationship between Quebec and Canada? Why has an issue that has been considered central for more than three decades become less attractive, if not marginal, within the discipline? The aim is to examine, from this example, the overlapping relationship between science and politics. The intent is also to show that Canadian political science has examined the Quebec/Canada relation…

Using data from a representative national survey of the Canadian electorate conducted in 2007, we find through descriptive and inferential statistics that younger individuals are more politically illiterate than older generations by a margin of 20–30 percentage points. We also detect that this generational po…

Canada may be among the oldest federations in the world but this says nothing about the strength of federalism in Canada. Based on the results of public opinion polling and roundtables with provincial government officials, this article argues that the political culture of federalism in Canada is quite weak. With the notable exception of Québec, Canadians in general and the provincial government officials who work on their behalf demonstrate littl…

Over the past decade, there have been a number of studies that seek to evaluate the state of federalism studies in Canada. The general conclusion seems to be that, while federalism continues to be an important part of the scholarly literature, there is a decline in the study of the traditional areas of federalism, a small number of federalism studies come from scholars in Quebec, and a relatively small number of studies are by female scholars. First, many of those promoting this idea base their analysis on inadequate definitions of decentralization and subsidiarity. Second, the discourse on decentralization hides an argume…

Central to these debates is the question of whether citizenship translates into a sense of belonging to a national community. Yet, recognizing that this understanding of citizenship is not accepted…
