Evaluating the Process and Outcome of a Primary Care Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Programme
Reliability and Associations of English and Mandarin Vocabulary Measures in Infants and Toddlers Growing Up in a Multilingual Society
This paper aims to understand the reliability of English and Mandarin vocabulary measures, and their associations, among infants and toddlers growing up in a multilingual society. Reliability was examined via item-response Rasch models across English and Mandarin word categories. Parents reported on 137 children’s (age = 5 to 27 months) English and Mandarin vocabulary with a newly developed measure, the developmental vocabulary checklist (DVC). H…
Literacy and attitude of Asian youths on dengue and its prevention in an endemic developed community
Background Over the past few decades, the incidence of dengue fever has considerably increased. Effective vector control strategies and specific protection using dengue vaccine are thought to be the key elements to combat dengue. The dengue incidence among the Singapore youths (15–24 years) was second only to that of adults (25–44 years). This study evaluated the knowledge and attitude of Singapore youths on dengue and its preventive measures. Me…
Youths’ awareness and attitudes towards raising the minimum legal age of smoking and passive smoking in Singapore
Objectives: Early smoking initiation has been associated with a higher risk of developing long-term smoking habit. There is a growing global consensus that demands raising the minimum legal age (MLA) for smoking as an approach to address this problem. Singapore successfully raised the MLA from 18 to 21 years in 2021. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness and attitude of multi-ethnic Asian youth (aged 15-24) on raising MLA to 21 and passive s…
Extending the diabetic retinopathy screening intervals in Singapore
In our prospective study of patients with T2DM and non-referable DR attending polyclinics, we found extremely low annual DR progression rates. These preliminary results suggest that extending screening intervals beyond 12 months may be viable and safe for most participants, although our 3-year follow up data are needed to substantiate this claim and develop the risk stratification model to identify low-risk patients with T2DM who can be assigned …
Prevalence and healthcare utilization in managing herpes zoster in primary care
Herpes zoster (HZ) causes significant morbidity, particularly in older adults. With the advent of a recombinant zoster vaccine, HZ is potentially preventable. However, data on HZ burden and healthcare utilization in primary care populations remains scarce. This study described the prevalence and healthcare utilization in managing HZ in a developed community. A retrospective database review was conducted across a cluster of 8 public primary care c…
Awareness, Barriers and Concerns of Adolescents Toward the Covid-19 Vaccine
Background: COVID-19 vaccination is a key public health measure to mitigate the crippling effects of the pandemic. COVID-19 vaccination began in adults and targeted adolescents at a later stage. However, medical decision-making on its uptake among the latter was unknown, which could be affected by their literacy and concerns about the vaccine. The study aimed to elucidate the awareness, concerns and barriers of adolescents toward the COVID-19 vac…
A multidisciplinary effort to increase Covid-19 vaccination among the older adults
Background COVID-19 vaccination significantly reduces the risk of infection and its associated morbidity and mortality. However, poor uptake of the COVID-19 vaccination was reported among the high-risk group of older people amidst emerging variants of concern. This community case study reports an outreach program in Singapore, COVE (COVID-19 Vaccination for the Elderly) initiated by healthcare workers in a cluster of primary care clinics. They as…
A 3-year retrospective study of unintended pregnancy in a developed multi-ethnic Asian community
Background: Women of childbearing age may face unintended pregnancy (UP). They are usually referred by primary care professionals (PCPs) to gynecologists to manage their UP in countries where abortion is legalized. The study aimed to determine the prevalence, demographic profiles, and associated factors of women in a developed community seeking referrals from PCPs for their UP. Methods: The sociodemographic and clinical data were extracted from t…
Empowering Patients With Diabetes Using Profiling and Targeted Feedbacks Delivered Through Smartphone App and Wearable (Empower)
Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses huge burden and cost on the healthcare system. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions that incorporate wearables may be able to improve diabetes self-management. The aim of this randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of personalized educational and behavioral interventions delivered through an EMPOWER mobile application (app) among patients with T2…
A qualitative research study on the illness perception of chronic pruritus in older Asian adults based on the Common‐Sense Model of self‐regulation
BACKGROUND: Chronic pruritus (CP), itch lasting more than 6 weeks, is common in community-dwelling older adults. Understanding their illness perception allows the attending physician to develop a personalised care plan to mitigate CP. AIM: This study explores the illness perception of CP among older Asian adults in an urban community. DESIGN: Qualitative research was conducted, framed by the Common-Sense Model of self-regulation (CSM). Through in…
Development of a novel gout treatment patient decision aid by patient and physician
BACKGROUND: Gout treatment is not optimized globally, often due to therapeutic inertia by physicians or poor adherence to urate-lowering medications by patients. A patient decision aid (PDA) to facilitate shared decision making (SDM) in gout treatment may overcome these physician-patient barriers. OBJECTIVE: The study explored the views of physicians and patients on a novel locally designed gout treatment PDA prototype. DESIGN: Qualitative descri…
The impact of Covid-19 pandemic on the health-seeking behaviour of an Asian population with acute respiratory infections in a densely populated community
NPI and public education measures during DORSCON Orange and Circuit Breaker periods appear to be associated with the health-seeking behaviour of the public. Changing levels of perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits and barriers, and widespread visual cues based on the Health Belief Model may account for this change. Understanding the impact of NPI and shifts in the public's health-seeking behaviour will be relevant and helpful in the planni…
