On the Amber Road. Bioarchaeological and archaeometric studies of raw materials identified in the artifacts from an Early Iron Age biritual cemetery in Opole-Groszowice (southern Poland)
Diverse deathscapes
Late Eneolithic funerary practices in southern Poland reveal a complex interplay of tradition, adaptation, and local expression. The Złota culture (c. 2900–2300 BCE) exemplifies this variability, as shown by two burials (graves 23 and 25) discovered in 2012 at site 6 in Złota. Grave 23 was a deep circular pit originally used for storage and later adapted for funerary purposes. Its base was paved with sandstone slabs and stones, and the lower wall…
Micro-scale prospection. A computed tomography examination of the urn fills of Lusatian Urnfield culture from SW Poland
Urns with fill were investigated as a micro-scale closed context, Post-depositional processes were observed as disturbances of layers of urn fill, CT imaging enabled the reconstruction of selected aspects of the funeral rites
Geometric-morphometric diversity of bronze axes from the Lusatian Urnfield cultures hoard from Rosko (north Greater Poland)
The hoard from Rosko (Site 47, Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, Czarnków-Trzcianka district) contained at least 71bronze artefacts, mainly socketed axes, and is dated to HaB2-HaB3. This study focuses on analysing the shape of the axes, evaluating their morphological differences, and assigning these artefacts to the currently accepted typological classification by Kuśnierz. Absolute measurements and photographic documentation were required for geometric…
C dates funded within the contract archaeological excavations conducted along the S7 roadway on the section between Moczydło and Kraków (Lesser Poland) between 2016 and 2022
This paper presents the results of accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating performed on archaeological samples (human bone, wood charcoal, and other charred plant macro-remains) from six sites located in the Lesser Poland Upland (southern Poland). We report 41 14 C age measurements performed on discoveries made during the contract excavations carried out during the S7 roadway construction from 2016–2022. The resulting ages fal…
Beetle body parts as a funerary element in a cremation grave from the Hallstatt cemetery in Domasław, south-west Poland
The discovery of an ornament made from Phyllobius viridicollis beetles in a cremation grave at the Domasław cemetery highlights the diverse use of organic materials in funerary rites. Together with dandelion pollen, the find offers interpretative potential for reconstructing the seasonal timing of the burial
Application of the lateral angle method for sex determination of cremated individuals from burials of the Lusatian culture cemetery in Czernikowice, Poland
Research of cremated human remains are limited by severe analytical constraints. Estimation of basic anthropological parameters such as sex of individuals or their age at death is often uncertain. A method for assessing the sex of cremated individuals measures the lateral angle of the petrous part (PP) of the temporal bone, known as the lateral angle (LA) method. In the cemetery of the Lusatian culture in Czernikowice (51.317389°N, 15.871469°E), …
Einmal ist keinmal. Peculiar burial practices of prehistoric communities settling the Lublin-Volhynia Upland in the Early Iron Age
The study addresses remains of two peculiar graves unearthed at the site Mikulin 9 in the Dobużek Scarp (Pol. Skarpa Dobużańska) area in Western Volhynia. Unique character of the burials under consideration consists in the peculiarity of funeral ritual performed, scenario of which was basically divided into two acts of burning of the deceased – once on cremation pyres, and then in the eventual places of their interment (grave pits). Both the grav…
Differentiation of burial practices in the Corded Ware Culture. The example of the Magnice site in SW Poland
