  • Medium Theory; or, "The War of the Worlds" at Regular Intervals

    Maria José A De Abreu•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 39

This article rethinks media and mediation in light of medium theory. It does so through the analysis of the alarming potential brought by the reenactment of Orson Welles's "The War of the Worlds" radio broadcast in Portugal in 1958. Locally branded as "A Invasão dos Marcianos" ("The Invasion of the Martians"), the article associates the alarming nature of the broadcast with the structure of fear of an attack from communist Russia in the context o…

  • New Media, New Publics

Charles Hirschkind, Maria José A De Abreu et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2017•Cited by: 25•References: 46

In this special issue, we examine how publics are brought into being through historically specific media practices. We treat the question of new media as an invitation to explore changing conditions of communication across a number of ethnographic locations. We argue that these changing conditions have challenged our capacity to understand the nature of publics. It is important to emphasize that none of the contributors perceives new media as a c…

  • Worldings

    Maria José A De Abreu•ARTICLE•Culture and Religion•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 17

In this article, I show how conceptions of religious authority among Catholic Charismatics in Brazil relate to particular aesthetic regimes. By aesthetic regime I mean the processes of decision-making by which a particular economy of the visible is negotiated and situated, the underlying forces that constitute what is sensory apprehensible and what remains latent, one might say, unworlded. Focusing on the relation Catholic Charismatics have with …

  • Technological indeterminacy

    Open Access•Maria José A De Abreu•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2013•Cited by: 12•References: 47

For some time now technological determinism, a theory that, broadly speaking, explains the relation between technology and humans in terms of historical causation, has been the target of intense criticism. In this article, I reassess a few of these criticisms in light of what I consider constitutes a new temporal sensibility. Rather than explained in causational terms, I characterize this sensibility as a tendency to place causes in the future. P…

  • Goose Bumps All Over

    Maria José A De Abreu•ARTICLE•Social Text•2008•Cited by: 7

This essay examines what a seemingly trivial bodily reaction such as goose bumps tells us about the relation between spirituality, technology, and voice. Based on ethnographic research, the article examines the media ministry of a Brazilian priest named Padre Marcelo Rossi. In particular, it addresses Padre Marcelo's popular “aerobics of Jesus,” a regime of embodied prayer techniques that combines contemporary music with mediaeval Byzantine praye…
