  • Prepandemic levels of cytokines and immunoglobulins and risk of Sars-CoV-2 infection and Covid-19 in the general population of Barcelona

Open Access•Miquel Porta, José Pumarega et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background From a public health perspective it is remarkable that there are yet no longitudinal studies in the general population investigating the influence of the basal immune state, measured before the pandemic, on the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19. Objective To investigate the specific and combined effects of personal levels of cytokines and immunoglobulins—measured in individuals’ blood 4 years before the pandemic—on the risk of …

  • Stability of cytokine and immunoglobulin concentrations in the general population

Open Access•Magda Gasull, José Pumarega et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: While there is wide evidence on concentrations of cytokines in patients attending health care facilities, evidence is scant on physiological, basal concentrations of cytokines in the general population and across sociodemographic groups, as well as on their potential stability over time. Furthermore, from a public health perspective it is remarkable that no studies have analyzed intraindividual changes in such concentrations from befo…

  • Cardiovascular Disease among Syrian refugees

    Open Access•Philippa Boulle, Albane Sibourd-Baudry et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2019

The burden of ASCVD within MSF clinics in Lebanon is substantial. Although prescription and adherence of individual secondary prevention drugs is acceptable, overall use of the three recommended drugs is suboptimal. Loss to follow-up rates were high. Further studies are needed to evaluate innovative strategies to increase the use of the multiple recommended drugs, and to increase the retention of patients with ASCVD in the care system

  • Evaluation of a community-based hypertension improvement program (ComHIP) in Ghana

Open Access•Peter Lamptey, Amos Laar et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

The high burden of hypertension among the studied population, coupled with high awareness, yet very low level of hypertension treatment and control requires in-depth investigation of the bottlenecks to treatment and control. The low hypertension treatment and control rates despite current and previous general educational programs particularly in the intervention district, may suggest that such programs are not necessarily impactful on the health …

  • Differences in stroke and ischemic heart disease mortality by occupation and industry among Japanese working-aged men

Open Access•Koji Wada, Hisashi Eguchi et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2016

Occupation- and industry-based risks for stroke and ischemic heart disease may vary among Japanese working-aged men. We examined the differences in mortality rates between stroke and ischemic heart disease by occupation and industry among employed Japanese men aged 25-59 years. In 2010, we obtained occupation- and industry-specific vital statistics data from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare dataset. We analyzed data for Japane…

  • The weight of nations

Open Access•Sarah Walpole, Sarah Catherine Walpole et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Increasing population fatness could have the same implications for world food energy demands as an extra half a billion people living on the earth

  • Effect of changes in moderate or vigorous physical activity on changes in health-related quality of life of elderly British women over seven years

Open Access•Minkyoung Choi, David Prieto-Merino et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2012

  • Modelling the association of disability according to the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) with mortality in the British Women's Heart and Health Study

Caroline Dale, David Prieto-Merino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•References: 43

BACKGROUND: The WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is now the dominant model for exploring the social consequences of a health condition. This paper investigates the association of the different ICF disability domains with mortality. METHODS: Data are from the British Women Heart and Health Study, a large (n=4157) prospectively studied cohort of women randomly selected from 23 towns aged 64-83 years in 20…

  • Using Electronic Health Care Records for Drug Safety Signal Detection

    Martijn J Schuemie, Preciosa M Coloma et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2012•References: 28

BACKGROUND: Drug safety monitoring relies primarily on spontaneous reporting, but electronic health care record databases offer a possible alternative for the detection of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relative performance of different statistical methods for detecting drug-adverse event associations in electronic health care record data representing potential ADRs. RESEARCH DESIGN: Data from 7 databases across 3 coun…

  • P1-14 Identifying adverse events of vaccines using a Bayesian method of medically guided information sharing

    Colin Crooks, D Prieto-Merino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction The detection of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) fundamentally depends on how these events are classified. Standard methods impose a choice between either grouping similar events together to gain power or splitting them into more specific definitions. We demonstrate a method of medically guided Bayesian information sharing that avoids grouping or splitting the data, and we further combine this with the standard epidemiol…
