  • Reaction times and intelligence

Open Access•Richard Lynn, Tsuyoshi Shigehisa•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1991

Japanese and British 9-year-old children were compared on the standard progressive matrices and twelve reaction time parameters providing measures of simple and complex decision times, movement times and variabilities. The mean of the Japanese children on the progressive matrices exceeded that of the British children by 0·65 SD units and on the decision times component of reaction times by 0·50 SD units, suggesting that the high Japanese mean on …

  • Behavioral characteristics of juvenile deviators in Japan

HIROSHI MOTOAKI, ICHIRO SOUMA et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1990

The purpose was to present a paradigm of the scales useful for assessing tendencies of juvenile behavioral deviations. One thousand one hundred and sixty high school boys and girls, their teschers, and their parents participated in the study during the 10 years period. Rating scales were devised for assessing self-rating behaviors of these boys and girls by their teachers and parents. Significant differences were found, between the behavioral dev…

  • Teacher-learner personality interaction under alien reinforcement

Tsuyoshi Shigehisa, Kaneo Nedate et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1987

The hypothesis tested was that the effects of alien reinforcement (AR), the non-Skinnerian and non-directive mode of intervention, are mediated primarily by the “two-person interactions.” Subjects were children (learners) and adolescents (teachers). The learners worked on form discrimination tasks. Contrary to conventional condition or external reinforcement (ER), under AR, the teachers administered reinforcers to the teachers themselves (benefic…

  • English/Japanese literal and free translation versions of the M-G Personality Questionnaire

HIROSHI MOTOAKI, Tsuyoshi Shigehisa et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1986

Japanese Forms H (J-H) and S (J-S), and English Forms H (E-H) and S (E-S), of the M-G were developed. E-H was constructed by literal-translation, E-S by free-translation of J-S and J-H by literal-translation of E-S. Each Form S represented self-cultural context (SCC) and Form H hetero-cultural context (HCC). Americans exhibited social-maladjustment in SCC and personal-adjustment in HCC whereas Japanese exhibited positive, dissimulating and social…

  • Intersensory Facilitation of Visual and Auditory Perception in Relation to Cultural Factors

    Tsuyoshi Shigehisa•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1979

Subjects estimated magnitude of brightness of light under six tone intensities, and loudness of tones under five light intensities. Analysis of results showed significant variance by intensity and subject, under each condition of light and tone. Perceived brightness and loudness increased with each increase in intensity of tone or light. Both brightness and loudness increases were greater in Buddhist than non-Buddhist subjects. Significant correl…

  • Effect of Auditory Stimulation on Visual Tracking as Functions of Stimulus Intensity, Task Complexity and Personality

    Tsuyoshi Shigehisa•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1974

Ophthalmographic determination was made under 5 tone intensities. Analysis of variance showed significant results for personality, task-complexity and their interaction, and intensity. Effects of personality and intensity were independent in visual tracking (not sensitivity), suggesting a difference between peripheral and central phenomena. Simple fixation deteriorated under each intensity in introverts, but improved in extraverts. In ambiverts, …

  • Effects of Intensity of Auditory Stimulation on Photopic Visual Sensitivity in Relation to Personality

PHYLLIS M J SHIGEHISA, Tsuyoshi Shigehisa et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1973

Visual thresholds were determined in 3 types of S by a modified method of limits under 5 intensities of a 1 KHz pure tone. An analysis of variance of the data showed significant results for personality group and its interaction with intensity conditions. Under medium and strong intensities of tone, visual sensitivity “decreased” in introverts, and “increased” in extraverts with a greater increase at strong than medium intensities. In ambiverts it…

  • Reliability of Auditory Responses Under Increasing Intensity of Visual Stimulation in Relation to Personality

    Open Access•Tsuyoshi Shigehisa, J R SYMONS•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1973

Auditory thresholds were determined in each subject on two different occasions, by a modified method of limits under 10 intensities of light. Coefficients of reliability and analyses of variance of the data showed significant reliability of responses to tones in introverts (I) and extraverts (E), under increasing intensities of light. The auditory responses were most reliable in I and least in ambiverts (A). The same visual stimuli produced the s…

  • Effect of Intensity of Visual Stimulation on Auditory Sensitivity in Relation to Personality

    Open Access•Tsuyoshi Shigehisa, J R SYMONS•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1973•Cited by: 1

Auditory thresholds were determined by a modified method of limits under 10 intensities of light (patterned or homogeneous). An analysis of variance of the data showed significant results for intensity conditions, personality type and the interaction of these parameters. Auditory sensitivity increased under weak, and decreased under strong, intensities of light in introverts. It increased under all intensities in extraverts, with greater increase…

  • Effect of Interval Between Auditory and Preceding Visual Stimuli on Auditory Sensitivity

    Open Access•Tsuyoshi Shigehisa, PHYLLIS M J SHIGEHISA et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1973•Cited by: 1

Auditory thresholds were determined by a modified method of limits, in introverts, ambiverts and extraverts, under three intensities of light. Five determinations were made: one before, one during and three (30 sec., c . 8 and 16 min.) after the light stimulation. An analysis of variance of the data showed significant results for the interval conditions, the personality type and the interaction of these parameters, under the weak light. Interval …

  • Relationship Between Behavioral Response and Metabolic Response of Nitrogen Under Avoidance Conditioning

    Tsuyoshi Shigehisa•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1964

For 100 days in the rat, fluctuations in behavior and urinary excretion of nitrogen were determined before, during and after the conditioning, extinction and test period. Avoidance conditioning was held 20 trials per day for 10 days. Behavioral effects of the conditioning were elicited and disappeared rapidly, whereas metabolic effects were gradually. Excretion per intake ratio of nitrogen significantly increased during the conditioning and resto…

  • Effects of Fear-Conditioning and Electricshock on Organic Nutrient Selection in the Albino Rat

    Tsuyoshi Shigehisa•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•1963

Casein, starch, olive oil, cod liver oil and dry yeast were subjected to the selection separately, and the fluctuations in selection were measured every 24 hrs before, during and after the conditioning (or the electric-shock) period. Experiment consisted of 30 days in 6 periods of 5 days. Group 1 was subjected to 10 classical type of conditioning (CS, AC 4V buzzer, 5′′; US, AC. 5 mA, 100V shock, . 2′′) during 30′ per day for 10 days. Group 2 was …
