  • The role of self-efficacy in emergency preparedness

    Open Access•Katherine M Burns, Cynthia A Rohrbeck et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

The negative effects of disasters highlight the importance of effective emergency preparedness and response, of which self-efficacy is a consistent predictor. However, existing preparedness self-efficacy measures are often disaster- or hazard-specific, limiting their use across different disasters. To address this gap, this research presents the development and validation of the Emergency Preparedness Self-Efficacy (EPSE) Scale , an all-hazards m…

  • Using Artificial Intelligence to assess the impact of social, physical, and financial health and personality on subjective well-being in a representative, multinational sample of older European and Is…

Open Access•Philip J Moore, Germano Vera Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: Subjective well-being (SWB) is an important outcome influenced by other aspects of health and personality. However, we know little about the independent effects of multiple health and personality dimensions on SWB in large, representative international samples. Artificial Intelligence (AI) models are particularly well-suited to detect multi-factor patterns in complex topics such as SWB. Methods: This study involved a representative sa…

  • Age differences in emotional support buffering on the relationship between physical disability and psychological distress

    Open Access•Cynthia A Rohrbeck, Philip W Wirtz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 44

Greater levels of physical disability are often accompanied by greater levels of psychological distress. Stress Buffering Theory ( Cohen & Wills, 1985 ; Thoits, 2011 ) posits that the level of social support buffers this relationship. Life Stage Theory proposes the previously untested hypothesis that the salience of the buffering offered by social support may decrease with age - i.e., that as individuals age, emotional support offers a weaker buf…

  • Anxiety effects on disaster precautionary behaviors

    Open Access•Philip W Wirtz, Cynthia A Rohrbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 43

Previous studies have revealed a negative relationship between anxiety and health-promoting behavior. This study identified three cognitive pathways through which anxiety operates on preparedness behaviors for terrorist attacks. Preparedness was regressed on trait anxiety, perceived threat, and self-efficacy based on data from 306 adults. Mediating paths through perceived threat (positive) and self-efficacy (negative) and an independent negative …

  • Quantity and quality of communication during parental deployment

Sarah L Friedman, Carol K Sigelman et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2017

Using an online survey methodology, we examined individual differences in distance communication between 75 adolescents and their deployed parents and found substantial individual differences in both the quantity and quality of their communication. We also examined the statistical associations between these features of distance communication and adolescents’ functioning, including emotional reactions following communication, health-related qualit…

  • Peer-assisted learning interventions with elementary school students

Cynthia A Rohrbeck, Marika Ginsburg‐Block et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2003

A meta-analytic review of group comparison design studies evaluating peer-assisted learning (PAL) interventions with elementary school students produced positive effect sizes (ESs) indicating increases in achievement (unweighted mean ES = 0.59, SD = 0.90; weighted ES, d = 0.33, p < .0001, 95% confidence interval = 0.29-0.37). PAL interventions were most effective with younger, urban, low-income, and minority students. Interventions that used inte…

  • Employment of Adolescents while in High School

    Open Access•Philip W Wirtz, Cynthia A Rohrbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1988•Cited by: 1

Prior research documenting a negative relationship between intense parttime employment and grade point average among high school students has failed to address whether the students themselves perceive a negative relationship, and if so whether parents, teachers, and other school officials are perceived as discouraging intense employment by low-achieving students who want to go on to college. Based on the responses of 457 randomly sampled students…

  • The Teacher-Child Rating Scale

A Dirk Hightower, William Work et al.•ARTICLE•School Psychology Review•1986

This paper presents two related studies describing the development and validation of the Teacher-Child Rating Scale (T-CRS), a brief objective socioemotional measure. More than 200 teachers rated 1,379 K-6th graders on the T-CRS. These ratings were factor analyzed into three six-item problem and three six-item competence scales. Indices of reliability and validity support the use of the T-CRS as a parsimonious diagnostic and screening measure. Po…
