  • Age differences in emotional support buffering on the relationship between physical disability and psychological distress

    Open Access•Cynthia A Rohrbeck, Philip W Wirtz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 44

Greater levels of physical disability are often accompanied by greater levels of psychological distress. Stress Buffering Theory ( Cohen & Wills, 1985 ; Thoits, 2011 ) posits that the level of social support buffers this relationship. Life Stage Theory proposes the previously untested hypothesis that the salience of the buffering offered by social support may decrease with age - i.e., that as individuals age, emotional support offers a weaker buf…

  • Anxiety effects on disaster precautionary behaviors

    Open Access•Philip W Wirtz, Cynthia A Rohrbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 43

Previous studies have revealed a negative relationship between anxiety and health-promoting behavior. This study identified three cognitive pathways through which anxiety operates on preparedness behaviors for terrorist attacks. Preparedness was regressed on trait anxiety, perceived threat, and self-efficacy based on data from 306 adults. Mediating paths through perceived threat (positive) and self-efficacy (negative) and an independent negative …

    Open Access•Tessa E Basford, Lynn R Offermann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leadership &…•2012•References: 16

Researchers and practitioners have devoted little attention to the impact of different sources of leadership support on follower outcomes. The present study is the first to examine the relationship between two levels of leadership support—immediate supervisors and senior management—on follower motivation and intent to stay. Although positively related, support from each level exerted an independent, positive influence on follower motivation and i…

  • Employment of Adolescents while in High School

    Open Access•Philip W Wirtz, Cynthia A Rohrbeck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1988•Cited by: 1

Prior research documenting a negative relationship between intense parttime employment and grade point average among high school students has failed to address whether the students themselves perceive a negative relationship, and if so whether parents, teachers, and other school officials are perceived as discouraging intense employment by low-achieving students who want to go on to college. Based on the responses of 457 randomly sampled students…

  • Postschool Education and Training

Open Access•Arvil V Adams, Stephen L Mangum et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•1987

This article examines knowledge and skill development during early adulthood when the individual has severed ties with formal education and entered the world of work. Focusing on a cohort of young men from the National Longitudinal Surveys, the paper examines the economic and social forces influencing participation in various forms of postschool education and training. A recursive model is used to explore skill development patterns over the lifec…
