Tell Me about the Test
Through a multiyear participant observation study in three southeastern drug courts, we explore how staff members react to clients' responses when confronted with positive tests for illicit drug use. Within their professional beliefs about drug addiction, treatment, and testing, staff members interpret the clients' responses as truths or lies, though some lies are worse than others and some truths are better than others. The staff's evaluations o…

Outsiders in a Hearing World
The deaf are outsiders in a world largely created and controlled by those who hear. Based on intensive interviewing, observation, and the personal experience of the author (whose parents are deaf), Outsiders in a Hearing World examines the lives of deaf people within a social and historical context. It examines the communities created by deaf people and the identities of their members, and describes and analyzes the everyday interactions between …
Societal Reaction And The Physically Disabled
According to the societal reaction perspective, the reactions of the nondisabled are the key to understanding the physically disabled. Consequently, stigmatization has been emphasized in explaining the often awkward and inhibited encounters between the disabled and the nondisabled. Stigmatization, though, cannot fully explain interaction between the disabled and the nondisabled. Through a qualitative analysis of encounters between the deaf and th…
Deviance within a Disabled Community
There is little agreement about why behavior is considered deviant and/or illegal. This paper is a qualitative case study of deviance within a community of disabled people. Through in-depth interviewing and an examination of the historical and present situation of the deaf in a hearing world, I analyze the deviant status of peddling among the deaf. Sociologists have long recognized that deviance and its sanctioning may be functional for the group…

Rehabilitation Success
Human service organizations assert that individuals succeed or fail in the change process. What are the criteria of this success? When multiple criteria of success are employed, does success on one criterion imply success on another? These questions are examined with over time data on 122 patients from two physical rehabilitation centers using a partial correlation approach to change scores. Findings reveal that evaluation of rehabilitation succe…
Hellfire and Delinquency Revisited
While Hirschi and Stark conclude that religiosity is unrelated to delinquency, their findings and a replication of their study in the Pacific Northwest (Burkett and White) may not be generalizable to other areas of the country. Using self-report data from 1,383 Atlanta tenth graders in 1970, we found a moderate negative relationship between church attendance and delinquent behavior. Our data also suggest a causal structure in which respect for th…
Black-White Adolescent Drinking
Many characterize adolescent drinking in the United States as a social problem. Inferences from research on adult drinking, emphasis on the disorganization of the black family, and public stereotypes suggest that black teenagers would be more heavily involved than white teenagers in drinking behavior. Yet little research has compared black-white teenage drinking. Analysis of 1970 data from a study of adolescent behavior in Atlanta (N = 1383) show…
