Open Access•Jurgen Manthey, Stephanie Klosterhalfen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Mental…•2025

The aim of this study is to examine cannabis sources shortly after the legalisation of recreational cannabis possession and cultivation and liberalisation of medical cannabis prescription in Germany in 2024. • Motivators and barriers for smoking cessation in people with multiple sclerosis

Open Access•A Keller, Alex M Keller et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Our results confirm findings of previous studies from other countries, identifying lack of knowledge, unsatisfactory communication with MS clinicians, and worries about negative consequences when quitting as barriers, and the MS-diagnosis as a motivator for smoking cessation. In a next step, we will use our findings for the development of an MS-specific online smoking cessation program

  • Recreational Cannabidiol

Adrienne Alayli, Daniel Kotz et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

BACKGROUND: Recreational cannabidiol (CBD) is frequently promoted as a medicinal or therapeutic cannabis product worldwide. Nationwide population-based data on awareness and use of recreational CBD are currently lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study estimates the prevalence of recreational CBD awareness and use among the population in Germany. It also explores potential associations with socio-demographic characteristics, tobacco smoking, and e-cigarett…

  • Exposure to Tobacco Smoking in Vehicles, Indoor, and Outdoor Settings in Germany

Open Access•Martin Mlinarić, Sabrina Kastaun et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Little is known on whether secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure in vehicles, indoor, and outdoor settings is similarly patterned in terms of different socio-epidemiological indicators in Germany. This study aims to estimate the current national-level prevalence and associated socio-epidemiological indicators of SHS exposure in vehicles, indoor, and outdoor settings in the German population, using current data from a representative household survey. We…

  • Electronic Cigarettes to Vaporize Cannabis

Sabrina Kastaun, Jaqueline Hildebrandt et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2020

Background: In Germany, cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug, and inhalation together with tobacco is most popular. However, it has been described that electronic cigarettes (ECs) are being used to vaporize cannabis (extract). No current data on EC cannabis use in the German population are yet available. Objectives: This study examines the prevalence of EC cannabis consumption for mood changing effects among current EC users, and associa…

  • Waterpipe Use among Adolescents in Germany

Open Access•Stephanie Klosterhalfen, Daniel Kotz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Waterpipe (WP) use is popular among youth worldwide, but epidemiological data from Germany are scarce. We aimed to describe prevalence rates of WP use (current, last 12 months, ever) and analysed correlates and trends among 11- to 17-year-olds in Germany. Analyses were based on data from the "German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents" study during 2014-2017 ( n = 6599). Changes in WP use prevalence compared with …

  • Do people know that cigarette filters are mainly composed of synthetic material? A representative survey of the German population (the Debra study)

    Daniel Kotz, Sabrina Kastaun•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

    DRKS00011322 and DRKS00017157

  • German Public Support for Tobacco Control Policy Measures

Open Access•Melanie Boeckmann, Daniel Kotz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Smoking prevalence in Germany remains high at approximately 28%. We assessed public support for tobacco legislation and associations between level of support and smoking and socio-demographic characteristics. Data from 2087 people were collected as part of the German Study on Tobacco Use ("DEBRA"): a nationally representative, face-to-face household survey. Public support was measured on total ban of sale, raising the minimum age for sales, taxat…

  • Prospective cohort study of the effectiveness of varenicline versus nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation in the “real world”

Open Access•Daniel Kotz, Jamie Brown et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Varenicline use with minimal professional support in the general population of smokers appears more effective than NRT Rx in achieving abstinence

  • The efficacy and safety of a nicotine conjugate vaccine (NicVAX®) or placebo co-administered with varenicline (Champix®) for smoking cessation

Open Access•Philippe Hoogsteder, Philippe HJ Hoogsteder et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

    ClinicalTrials.gov: (NCT00995033)

  • How cost-effective is ‘No Smoking Day’

    Daniel Kotz, J A Stapleton et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2010

NSD emerges as an extremely cost-effective public health intervention

  • Explaining the social gradient in smoking cessation

    Daniel Kotz, Robert West•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2008

Smokers in more deprived socioeconomic groups are just as likely as those in higher groups to try to stop and use aids to cessation but there is a strong gradient across socioeconomic groups in success, with those in the lowest group being half as likely to succeed compared with the highest. Determining the cause of, and counteracting, this gradient is paramount in reducing health inequalities

  • Efficacy of confrontational counselling for smoking cessation in smokers with previously undiagnosed mild to moderate airflow limitation
