Aizen Digital Meditation Intervention for Caregiver Burnout in Taiwan—A Pilot Randomized Trial
Caregiver stress is a global health issue, particularly acute in Taiwan due to demographic and cultural factors. While mindfulness meditation is effective for burnout, research on culturally adapted, digitally delivered interventions for Taiwanese caregivers is lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a brief, 5-week, digitally supported meditation program for professional and informal caregivers in Taiwan…
Automatic Movement Recognition for Evaluating the Gross Motor Development of Infants
The experimental results of pose estimation and tracking indicate that the ViTPose model provided the best performance for pose recognition. A total of 227 features related to kinematics, motions, and postures were extracted and calculated. A one-way ANOVA analysis revealed 106 significant features that were retained for constructing prediction models. The results show that a random forest model achieved the best performance with an average F1-sc…
Anxiety, depression, and their associations with Covid-19-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices among healthcare professionals
A&D and COVID-19-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices vary across countries. Thus, personalized support mechanisms and interventions are needed to address the diverse needs of HCPs within specific policy and country contexts
Excess Mortality and Containment Performance During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Objectives. To expand COVID-19 containment indicators to evaluate the relationship between excess mortality and government response. Methods. We developed a longitudinal study analyzing excess mortality, COVID-19 containment, and structural conditions in 34 countries between 2020 and 2022. Results. The average excess mortality ratios of the 34 countries were 1.09, 1.14, and 1.11 in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively. Thirteen countries experience…
Perceptions of Covid-19 during and after the Omicron outbreak among healthcare personnel in Indonesia
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic occurred in several waves with different levels of seriousness. Healthcare personnel (HCP) constituted a high-risk population for COVID-19, necessitating monitoring of their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) status and level of psychological distress. This study investigated differences in the impacts of COVID-19 during and after the Omicron outbreak among HCP in Indonesia. Methods An online structured q…
Identifying differential trajectories and predictors for depressive symptoms in adolescents using latent class growth analysis
INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the differential trajectories and relevant determinants of depressive symptoms in adolescents by following cohorts that included junior, senior, and vocational high school adolescents, over a 3-year period in Taiwan. METHODS: Longitudinal data were obtained from 575 adolescents who participated in the Taiwan Adolescent to Adult Longitudinal Study. Data analysis included latent class growth with time-varying c…
Perceptions towards the Covid-19 Pandemic during Different Lockdown Levels among International Students in Taiwan
International students face many impediments under the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this study are to assess the association between the perceptions of international students and the lockdown policy for COVID-19. In 2021, three different levels of lockdown policy were enforced, including level I from January to April, level III from May to July, and level II from August to December. We conducted three surveys for international graduate st…
Association between Anemia and Stroke in Females
Optimal stroke prevention strategies for women should take into account specific sex-related stroke risk factors. Anemia is a common medical condition in females, particularly in women of reproductive age. This study investigated whether anemia is an independent risk factor for stroke in females in a population-based cohort study. We investigated newly diagnosed anemic female patients with no history of central nervous system disease, psychiatric…
Electronic Cigarette Use and Smoking Initiation in Taiwan
A growing literature indicates that electronic cigarette use increases the risk of subsequent initiation of conventional smoking among cigarette-naïve adolescents in several Western countries. This research assesses the same relationship in an Asian country, Taiwan. The Taiwan Adolescent to Adult Longitudinal Study is a school-based survey that was carried out in two waves in 2014 (baseline) and in 2016 (follow-up). It employs probability samplin…
Associations of Waist Circumference, Socioeconomic, Environmental, and Behavioral Factors with Chronic Kidney Disease in Normal Weight, Overweight, and Obese People
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) places a heavy burden on the healthcare system worldwide. The risk factors may vary by body adiposity. We aimed to investigate the associations of socioeconomic, environmental, and behavioral factors with CKD in different groups of body mass indexes (BMI). Methods: A case-control study was conducted in 3280 participants (1048 CKD and 2232 non-CKD) from seven hospitals and nearby communities from May 2012 t…
Exploiting a low tax system
Low and unchanged tobacco taxes enable tobacco companies to use aggressive pricing and segmentation strategies to increase the real price of cigarettes without making them less affordable while simultaneously maintaining customers' loyalty. It is crucial to continue monitoring the industry's pricing strategies and to regularly increase taxes to promote public health and to prevent tobacco industry from profiting at the expense of government reven…
Tobacco control within and beyond WHO MPOWER
Tobacco will be a leading cause of death in Taiwan for the coming decades, showing yet again the long-term consequences of smoking on public health. The MPOWER package, even if adopted at the highest level with a large tax increase, is unlikely to reduce smoking prevalence to the endgame goal of 5% in the next five decades
Functioning and Disability Analysis of Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury by Using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0
The purpose of this study is to compare traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and spinal cord injuries (SCI) patients' function and disability by using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0); and to clarify the factors that contribute to disability. We analyzed data available between September 2012 and August 2013 from Taiwan's national disability registry which is based on the International Classification of Funct…
Measuring Disability and Its Predicting Factors in a Large Database in Taiwan Using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0
The definition of disability had been unclear until the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health was promulgated in 2001 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Disability is a critical but relatively neglected public-health concern. We conducted this study to measure disabilities by using the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) and identify the factors that contribute to disabilities. We obtained and an…
A comparative study of Taiwan's short-term medical missions to the South Pacific and Central America
BACKGROUND: Taiwan has been dispatching an increasing number of short-term medical missions (STMMs) to its allied nations to provide humanitarian health care; however, overall evaluations to help policy makers strengthen the impact of such missions are lacking. Our primary objective is to identify useful strategies by comparing STMMs to the South Pacific and Central America. METHODS: The data for the evaluation come from two main sources: the off…
Significant effects of implementation of health-promoting schools on schoolteachers’ nutrition knowledge and dietary intake in Taiwan
Objective Although teachers are the key participants in health-promoting schools (HPS) programme delivery, it is still unknown whether teachers are appropriate health information resources and role models for students with respect to healthy diets. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of implementing HPS programmes on teachers’ nutrition knowledge and diets. Design One HPS programme aiming at dietary intervention (HP-D) and one HPS …
A significant decrease in blood pressure through a family-based nutrition health education programme among community residents in Taiwan
Objective To evaluate the effect on decrease in blood pressure of modifying risk factors for stroke, such as blood lipid profiles, diet habits and indices of body weight, through a family-based nutrition health education programme among hypertensive patients and pre-hypertensive subjects without taking any antihypertensive drugs. Design and setting This was a community-based prospective study. The study population was randomly selected from commu…
