  • Exploring Loneliness,Social Factors, and Clinical Correlates of C-reactive Protein in African American Breast Cancer Survivors

Open Access•Kelsie Campbell, Fatimata Sanogo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2026

IMPORTANCE: African American women experience disproportionately high breast cancer morbidity and mortality, including early onset, more aggressive tumor subtypes, and poorer survival outcomes. Chronic psychosocial stress has been shown to dysregulate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system activity, promoting low-grade systemic inflammation and altering immune signaling within the tumor microenvironment. However, few s…

  • The U.S. Federal Menthol Ban

Open Access•Kyrah Frank, Chanita Hughes Halbert et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2026

Despite longstanding evidence of the disproportionate burden menthol cigarettes pose to Black Americans, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) proposed federal ban has faced consistent delays. Menthol is associated with an increased risk of addiction, fewer quit attempts, and disproportionate rates of smoking-related illness and death among Black Americans. While states like Massachusetts and California have taken steps to implement bans,…

  • Validating the satisfaction with life scale among early adolescents

    Open Access•Scott Donaldson, Scott I Donaldson et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2025

The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) has been extensively validated using Classical Test Theory, mostly relying on factor analytic methods among adult samples. The current study used Item Response Theory to validate SWLS among a sample of early adolescents in California and examine associations between SWLS and tobacco and cannabis use. Data were collected from ninth-grade students ( N = 2552) attending 10 public high schools in Los Angeles, C…

  • Monitoring website marketing among leading e-cigarette brands and vendors in California

Scott Donaldson, Trista Beard et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2023

Findings from this study can be used to inform statewide regulations of promotional communications found on e-cigarette companies' websites and encourage enforcement of age-verification procedures. This may help reduce susceptibility to use, or continued use of, e-cigarette products among price-sensitive populations, such as adolescents and young adults
