Spatial inequalities in urban infrastructure for physical activity in Greater Santiago, Chile
This study characterized urban infrastructure (UI) supporting physical activity (PA) in Greater Santiago (GS), Chile, and examined its spatial distribution. A conceptual model comprising four key dimensions — active transport, green areas, public transport, and safety — was used to guide selection of relevant indicators (23 total). Statistical and spatial analyses were conducted across 34 municipalities and 1623 neighborhoods using a summary inde…
Global Healthy and Sustainable City Indicators
Measuring and monitoring progress towards achieving healthy, equitable and sustainable cities is a priority for planners, policymakers and researchers in diverse contexts globally. Yet data collection, analysis, visualisation and reporting on policy and spatial indicators involve specialised knowledge, skills, and collaboration across disciplines. Integrated open-source tools for calculating and communicating urban indicators for diverse urban co…
Associations between urban greenspace and depressive symptoms in Mexico's cities using different greenspace metrics
Greenspace has been shown to be positively associated with mental wellbeing, but studies from the global South have been scarce. We advance the understanding of the relationship between greenspace and depressive symptoms by using multiple clearly defined metrics describing neighborhood greenness and urban parks in an understudied region with rapid urban growth. We linked individual-level health survey data for urban residents in Mexico (n = 17,25…
Health, economic and social burden of tobacco in Latin America and the expected gains of fully implementing taxes, plain packaging, advertising bans and smoke-free environments control measures
Smoking represents a substantial burden in Latin America. The full implementation of tobacco control measures could successfully avert deaths and disability, reduce healthcare spending and caregiver and productivity losses, likely resulting in large net economic benefits
Aging and self-reported health in 114 Latin American cities
Across cities in Latin America, aging impact on health is significant among middle-aged adults, and among men. In both genders, cities with lower SEI or lower GDP per-capita were associated with poor SRH. More research is needed to better understand gender inequalities and how city socioeconomic environments, represented by different indicators, modify exposures and vulnerabilities associated with aging
Evaluaciones económicas de tecnologías sanitarias
Phenomena as the progressive increase of health expenditure and the population aging have lead many countries to consider economic methodologies in order to obtain bigger sanitary benefits in contexts of limited resources. This article describes the basic components to consider in a health technology assessment , it analyses the process of decision making with cost-effectiveness analysis and reports how this methodology has been widely implemente…
