  • The Impact of Road Development on Household Welfare in Rural Papua New Guinea

Open Access•Martin Wiegand, E Koomen et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2023

In this paper we evaluate the impact of road development on household welfare in rural Papua New Guinea (PNG) between 1996 and 2010, using two geocoded cross-sectional national household surveys and corresponding road maps. We make use of time-variation in road surface type and condition as recorded in PNG’s National Road Asset Management System, focusing on routes that connect rural households to urban areas. To tackle endogenous placement of ro…

  • The economics of disaster risks and impacts in the Pacific

    Open Access•Christopher Edmonds, Ilan Noy•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2018

Purpose The Pacific islands face the highest disaster risk globally in per capita terms. Countries in the region have been affected by several recent catastrophic events, as well as by frequent natural hazards of smaller magnitude. The purpose of this paper is to quantify total disaster risk faced by Pacific island countries (PICs). Design/methodology/approach The paper evaluates the three main sources of data for quantifying risk in the region—t…

  • Are small‐scale rice farmers in eastern India really inefficient? Examining the effects of microtopography on technical efficiency estimates

Open Access•Nobuhiko Fuwa, Christopher Edmonds et al.•ARTICLE•Agricultural Economics•2007

The article analyzes how controlling for differences in land types (defined by position on a low‐scale toposequence) affects estimates of farm technical efficiency for rice farms in eastern India. Contrasting previous research, we find that farms are considerably more technically efficient when efficiency estimates are carried out at the plot level and control for plot characteristics rather than at the farm level without such controls. Estimates…
