State making and state terror
Land Rent, Peasant Migration, and Political Power in Yao Cun, 1911-1937
In April of 1980 I was received by the Henan Province History Research Institute of the Henan Province Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to begin the first systematic oral political history project on peasant revolution in modern China. The focus of this project is on the problems of livelihood faced by the peasants of Lin county and several other counties in the pre-Liberation period, roughly 1911-49. In May I began an investigation of the hist…
The peasants of Yaocun
This paper shows that peasants in China, as elsewhere, are themselves a vital source on history and politics, and that they are able to help us recapture the unstudied moments of rebellion and revolution in pre‐Liberation years. The first part examines the process of peasant impoverishment and migration in one North China village, and then places peasant efforts to cope with loss of family security in thecontext of an important national level pol…

On Peasant Revolution and National Resistance
A longstanding thesis on the Chinese revolution is that the peasants embraced the Communist movement because the brutalization by the invading Japanese Army aroused the village people, making it possible for the Communist Party to organize them and to appeal to their nationalist aspirations. A theoretical exploration of peasant mobilization and revolutionary war in the T'aihang Mountain-North China Plain revolutionary base suggests different reas…
The World Turned Downside Up
Tenants in Revolution The Tenacity of Traditional Morality
This essay presents a slice of a larger theoretical interpretation (Thaxton, 1975) of peasant revolution in China. It employs eclectic and empirical methods to probe and posit the origins and growth of participation by tenants in the rural revolution which burst forth in the grain-growing regions of Nortlh China from 19 11 to 1949. It draws on a vertical, patron-client model of political change to understand the erosion of elite legitimacy and ut…

Modernization and counter-revolution in Thailand
Thailand is now the linchpin in America’s Asia. As revolutionaries in Indochina continue to force a reduction of U.S. ground troops in Asia and as Washington’s commitment to Taiwan weakens, Thailand assumes increasing strategic importance for current American counterrevolutionary operations in continental Asia. This development extends a general trend which began in the early 1950s
