  • A pilot self-coach alignment audit in NCAA collegiate rowers

Open Access•Zacharias Papadakis, Andreas Stamatis•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Background Testing relational mechanisms like self-verification (SV) in competitive collegiate sport is constrained by field-feasible measurement and the small-N problem. We introduce a brief alignment audit and evaluate its field feasibility and statistical behavior in a single-team pilot Methods NCAA Division II women rowers ( N = 12) completed four in-season waves aligned with 2,000-m ergometer assessments, reporting self-rated mental toughnes…

  • Is Mindfulness the Common Ground Between Mental Toughness and Self-Compassion in Student Athletes? A Cross-Sectional Study

Open Access•Zacharias Papadakis, Shana M Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Investigation…•2025

This study interrogates whether mental toughness (MT) and self-compassion (SC)—historically framed as oppositional constructs—can coexist synergistically among NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA collegiate athletes, with mindfulness as a hypothesized mediator. A cross-sectional survey of 396 participants (mean age: 19.8 yrs ± 1.9 SD; females: 51%), revealed a robust MT–SC correlation (r = 0.46), which attenuated to 0.31 when mindfulness was modeled,…

  • Predicting Firefighters’ Physical Ability Test Scores from Anaerobic Fitness Parameters & Mental Toughness Levels

Open Access•Peter Beitia, Andreas Stamatis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Physical ability test (PAT) evaluates firefighters' (FF) occupational capacity. The contribution of anaerobic systems during PAT and mental toughness (MT) relationship to PAT is unexplored. PAT modeling based on anaerobic fitness (AF), MT, and respective relationships were examined. Fourteen male FFs (Age: 29.0 ± 7.0 years) completed a PAT composed of occupationally-specific tasks in full gear. On a separate day, a series of AF assessments were p…

  • Moving Past the One-Size-Fits-All Education-Training Model of Police Academies to the Self-Prescribed Individualized Exercise Prescription Model

Open Access•Zacharias Papadakis, Andreas Stamatis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Law enforcement agencies generally employ the "one-size-fits-all" education-training model. Its effectiveness compared to alternative training models has been under scrutiny. Physical fitness scores of Serbian male (n = 98) and female (n = 79) police cadets during their yearly evaluation were compared. Cadets trained for the first 3 years with the "one-size-fits-all" model. In the fourth year, they self-prescribed an individualized exercise progr…

  • High-Intensity Interval Exercise Performance and Short-Term Metabolic Responses to Overnight-Fasted Acute-Partial Sleep Deprivation

Open Access•Zacharias Papadakis, Jeffrey S Forsse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

People practicing high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) fasted during the morning hours under a lack of sleep. Such a habit may jeopardize the health benefits related to HIIE and adequate sleep. Fifteen habitually good sleeper males (age 31.1 ± 5.3 SD year) completed on a treadmill two isocaloric (500 kcal) HIIE sessions (3:2 min work:rest) averaged at 70% VO 2reserve after 9-9.5 h of reference sleep exercise (RSE) and after 3-3.5 h of acute-pa…
