A pilot randomized controlled trial of acceptance-based behavior therapy to address treatment engagement outcomes and disclosure among new-to-care patients with HIV
0.53; 95%CI: -0.26, 1.31), although this difference was not statistically significant. ABBT showed small to medium effects on secondary outcomes of disclosures of HIV status and disclosure self-efficacy in exploratory analyses. Despite the study's premature termination, results are consistent with, but do not establish, potential ABBT benefit, suggesting further testing in larger trials is needed.Trial registered at clinicaltrials.gov (#NCT042012…
HIV-Pass (Pain and Sadness Support)
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether HIV-Pain and Sadness Support (HIV-PASS), a collaborative behavioral health intervention based on behavioral activation, is associated with decreased pain-related interference with daily activities, depression, and other outcomes in people living with HIV. METHODS: We conducted a three-site clinical trial ( n = 187) in which we randomly assigned participants to receive either HIV-PASS or health educ…
Examination of using alcohol to cope, depressive symptoms, and perceived social support in persons with HIV and Hepatitis C
Depression is common among people living with HIV (PLWH) and some likely turn to alcohol to cope with this emotional distress. Using alcohol to cope is associated with increased alcohol use, persistent longitudinal alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. The current study evaluated factors that may be related to perceptions of adulthood—living situation, age, gender, financial independence, educational status, domains of adulthood—a…

Relationship quality among HIV patients and their caregivers
Despite the increasing attention to caregivers of HIV patients, no previous study has systematically investigated the effects of the relationship quality between an HIV patient and their caregiver. The present study assessed 176 dyads consisting of an HIV-infected patient and their self-identified 'caregiver'. Relationship quality was measured by the Family Assessment Device (FAD). Dependent measures included the Beck Depression Inventory, SF-36 …
Coping and Burden Among Informal HIV Caregivers
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the role of coping on caregiver burden among a heterogeneous group of caregivers of persons living with HIV during the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Methods: Burden and coping were examined among 176 caregivers of persons living with HIV. Three styles of coping were examined using a 7-item scale: active-approach (task), blame–withdrawal (emotion), and distancing (avoidance). Results: …
