Barriers and facilitators to HIV testing among transgender people in Georgia
Transgender (TG) people face a disproportionately high burden of HIV globally due to stigma, discrimination, criminalization, and limited access to trans-specific healthcare. In Georgia, HIV prevalence among TG individuals is 24.1%, compared with 0.3% in the general adult population. While predictors of HIV testing have been documented, the factors influencing testing behaviors remain insufficiently understood. This study explored barriers and fa…
A qualitative study to explore barriers to access behavioral health services among older people living with HIV in Georgia
Older people living with HIV (PLWH) in Georgia experience a high rate of behavioral health disorders, the treatment for which requires an integrated approach. However, these older PLWH experience unmet needs for behavioral health services. We aimed to explore barriers for older PLWH to access behavioral healthcare services in Georgia. In 2024, we conducted 28 in-depth interviews with PLWH aged ≥40 years in four major Georgian cities. Participants…
Service capacity of institutions serving the mental health needs of persons living with HIV in Georgia
This study mapped the availability, integration, and referral patterns of mental health (MH) and substance use disorder (SUD) services for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Georgia. PLWH face a heightened burden of MH conditions, compounded by systemic and social barriers. In Georgia, these challenges are exacerbated by fragmented healthcare system, centralized HIV care, and limited service integration. Cross-sectional survey was conducted between…
Factors associated with HIV infection and the utilization of HIV testing services among transgender people in Georgia
We assessed factors associated with HIV infection as well as the utilization of HIV testing among transgender people (TGs) in the country of Georgia. From July 2020 to January 2021, TG participants were recruited using snowball sampling in three major Georgian cities: Tbilisi, Batumi and Kutaisi. The participants underwent structured face‒to-face interviews and rapid tests for HIV. The study employed descriptive analyses, and bivariate and multiv…
Mental Health and Cognitive Performance Among Older People Living with HIV in Georgia
This study shows high percentages of psychiatric and cognitive morbidities among older PLWH in Georgia. Longitudinal studies should be conducted to evaluate cognitive performance and associated factors among older PLWH in Georgia
HIV stigma and other barriers to Covid-19 vaccine uptake among Georgian people living with HIV/Aids
We conducted a study in Georgia to examine behavioral insights and barriers to COVID-19 vaccine uptake among people living with HIV (PLWH). Between December 2021-July 2022, we collected quantitative data to evaluate participants’ demographics, COVID-19 knowledge, attitude, perception, and HIV stigma as potential covariates for being vaccinated against COVID-19. We conducted a multivariate analysis to define the factors independently associated wi…
Factors associated with HIV counseling and testing behavior among undergraduates of universities and vocational technical training schools in Tbilisi, Georgia
Intervening on HIV stigmatizing attitudes may be a critical prevention or HCT promotion strategy among youth in Georgia. In order to better inform policy and programs, future research should examine contextual factors in secondary and post-secondary schools that impact HCT among Georgian youth. Specifically, factors impacting differential rates of HCT among males and females, the social stigma and knowledge related to HCT and HIV, and the impact …
Household income and poor treatment outcome among patients with tuberculosis in Georgia
We demonstrated that TB patients in Georgia with lower household income were at greater risk of poor TB treatment outcomes. Providing targeted social assistance to TB patients and their households may improve clinical response to anti-TB therapy
The role of supportive supervision on immunization program outcome - a randomized field trial from Georgia
BACKGROUND: One of the most common barriers to improving immunization coverage rates is human resources and its management. In the Republic of Georgia, a country where widespread health care reforms have taken place over the last decade, an intervention was recently implemented to strengthen performance of immunization programs. A range of measures were taken to ensure that immunization managers carry out their activities effectively through dire…
Influence of household demographic and socio-economic factors on household expenditure on tobacco in six New Independent States
Given the high levels of poverty and high rates of smoking in the New Independent States, these findings have important policy implications. They indicate that the impact and opportunity costs of smoking on household finances are more significant for the poor than for the rich. Any reductions in smoking prevalence within poor households could have a positive economic impact
Health system barriers to strengthening vaccine-preventable disease surveillance and response in the context of decentralization
To strengthen surveillance and response systems in Georgia, as well as in other countries, donor, governments, and other stakeholders should consider how health systems factors influence investments to improve the availability of data, analysis, and response. Linking the intervention to broader health sector reforms in management processes and organizational culture will be critical to ensure that efforts designed to promote evidence-based decisi…
