Reaffirming Juvenile Justice
This book will expand students’ knowledge and understanding of the evolution of juvenile justice in the last 50 years. Designed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the landmark case In re Gault, which the U.S. Supreme Court decided in 1967, the authors provide a brief history of juvenile justice, then frame the developments and transformations that have occurred in the intervening years. Topics covered include an overview of the dramatic cha…
Sex Offender Recidivism Revisited
The effectiveness of sex offender treatment programs continues to generate misinformation and disagreement. Some literature reviews conclude that treatment does not reduce recidivism while others suggest that specific types of treatment may warrant optimism. The principal purpose of this study is to update the most recent meta-analyses of sex offender treatments and to compare the findings with an earlier study that reviewed the meta-analytic stu…
How to be a Good Teacher
What makes a good teacher? What are the characteristics and qualities that distinguish a good teacher? How does a good teacher teach? Can teachers learn to be more effective? These questions reflect efforts to define teaching excellence and to identify strategies that improve teaching. Researchers have developed lists, models, and taxonomies that identify both personal traits and pedagogical skills that contribute to effective teaching and distin…
Crime Control, Politics & Policy
This book reviews concepts, information and points of view that help to explain the context and constraints of the criminal justice system. The chapters summarize developments in public policy and crime control, and interweave themes central to the discussion: the impact of ideology, the role of the media, and the politicization of crime and criminal justice.

A preliminary study of student attitudes on juvenile justice policy
The philosophy and practice of juvenile justice have experienced significant transformations in the last 100 years. A shift to “get tough” attitudes has prompted various legislative reforms and has changed if not hardened attitudes toward youth. In context of these policy developments and social attitudes, this paper summarizes a preliminary study of 1104 undergraduate students on their attitudes on juvenile justice policies in the United States.…
The Nacirema revisited
Modeled after Horace Miner's classic article “The Body Ritual of the Nacirema,” an explanation of modern day Nacirema undergraduates as “academic deviants” is used as a pedagogical tool for negotiating criminological theory. Similar to the question, why do people commit crime, this paper asks why are some students “criminal”, i.e., poor students
Strategies to meet the educational needs of non-traditional graduate students
This paper examines some of the issues involved in offering graduate programs that meet the educational needs of nontraditional graduate students. The strengths and weaknesses of two models—a weekend program and a satellite program—are reviewed, and the impact of technology on these models is discussed. We also make recommendations for developing successful alternative graduate programs. The discussion includes the characteristics of the student …
